Chapter 31

You frowned and tended when you heard a particular person call out your name. Aizawa sounded one part surprised, another part furious. As you turned around you tried to remind yourself that you were supposed to be equals. Or something close to that. The tone he used really didn't help you feel all that confident in that position.

"Yes?"

"You were supposed to be at your office, working," Aizawa pointed out.

Behind you, you heard as Todoroki sat Todoroki down. Or maybe it was that Todoroki escaped from Todoroki. Either way the Todorokis weren't embracing. Which just meant that they were both about to see you get dressed down for something that really wasn't even your fault. Not a comforting thought.

"I was," you said. "I'd recently finished with a session—"

"With who?" Aizawa asked. At least his tone didn't sound as angry.

"A client," you said as you pursed your lips.

Said client, Endeavor, was right behind you. With that in mind there was no way you were name dropping. Not that you would have in this situation but having him behind you only strengthened your resolve.

"I had finished up my paperwork and notes for the client when I went outside. At which point, Hawks, who was called in as backup for this situation, had me in the air on the way here. He's insanely fast by the way. Like seriously, he probably could have been here sooner if he hadn't picked me up. Why did no one warn me he's like a pretty, fluffy jet?"

Though you didn't know it, a certain winged hero was internally grinning over the compliment. The man in front of you was not as happy over your words.

"No one told you because it wasn't important. Hawks is not part of the U.A staff and you told us that you had no relationship with him."

"I don't?"

"Then explain why a pro-hero you have no relationship with picked you up to take you to an active incident. You could have—"

"Take it easy Eraserhead," Hawks said with a grin as he put a hand on the taller man's shoulder.

If looks could kill, Hawks would have been fried chicken at that point. At least when Aizawa snapped his gorgon-like stare his way. You shifted uncomfortably as you realized that Hawks was stepping into the argument. It wasn't his fault that Aizawa didn't believe you were mature or experienced enough...

Though you couldn't help but feel relieved that Aizawa's disapproval had a new target. It wasn't like you knew that the anger that he projected was because of something different.

"I was in the area during an investigation when I got the call," Hawks said as Aizawa had fully turned around to face him. "Since I knew that U.A had stationed students on this island, I knew that they might need to be looked after. So I picked up the best healer U.A has on the way to help them out."

"You intentionally picked up a civilian without a provisional hero license, much less the real thing, to bring here?" The level of disapproval in his tone made you wince for Hawks.

The winged hero took it better than you had. "The students needed her help. I wouldn't have set her down if I thought she would have been in real danger."

And the aura of anger and disapproval continued. You clenched your jaw as you stared at his darkly clothes back. Why was it that he was okay with 15 year olds going into the field, doing the actual fighting, but was against you doing the job you were hired to do? Especially as he'd been the one to recommend you for the job! The double standards were frustrating.
