Aspirations
Chapter 51You looked at your target with determination as you marched over to him. Aizawa was sitting at a table in the teacher's room, eating a rather plain lunch. Principal Nezu was there as well with a meal much more suitable for a carnivore; he seemed to be eating such a hearty meal delicately. Both men looked up as you pulled to a stop at the table with a nicely wrapped box.
"This isn't funny anymore," you said seriously as you put the box on the table.
Returning a gift was definitely rude. At the same time so was ignoring your wishes. And since Aizawa had transgressed first, you felt less rude by comparison.
"I can dress myself. I have plenty of clothes. I don't need anything."
"I didn't buy that," Aizawa said, barely having to look at the box to know that.
"What?" You asked out of confusion as you looked between the dark haired man and the nicely wrapped clothes.
You only knew it was clothes because you recognized the store name. The style, the way the box was presented, was also hard to mistake. You didn't need to open it to know that it was an expensive, quality piece. Given that Aizawa had been guilty of buying you maternity clothes already, you had assumed it came from him. Apparently you were wrong. Aizawa had his faults (a lot of them) but as far as you knew he never lied. Or at least he didn't make a habit of lying to you in any case.
"Who did?"
His shrug made you want to strangle him. Especially as he took another bite of white rice. You stared at the package intensely as though it would tell you. Any harder and the poor thing might have spontaneously combusted.
"It looks like you have a fascinating mystery to solve," Nezu said, his tone full of amusement. "Why not open the box and see if your admirer left a note?"
It was a logical solution. As there wasn't a tag on the outside, it was possible that there was one on the inside. You doubted there would be a receipt to quell your curiosity of how much something presented in such a nice box would cost, but some type of card was possible. You hesitated opening it in front of Nezu and Aizawa though. Especially as Nezu brought up the fact that it could be from an admirer.
Your stomach clenched both nervously and angrily. If Hawks had sent you clothes, after what you thought he'd done, then you didn't want Nezu or Aizawa to see your first reaction. You had a feeling it would be a less pleasant one. Thinking that it could have been from him made you feel a little guilty though. After all, regardless of the mishap with the Commission, you weren't an important person. Someone like Hawks, who you'd only had a connection to due to the conniving Reproduction Initiative administration, had a lot more important things and people to occupy his time than you. Especially as you'd equivocally dropped out of the program and blocked his stupid number on your phone.
"Please do let me know when you find out, I hate leaving something unsolved."
You looked up at Nezu. Despite the fact that he was perfectly still, you got the feeling that if you let him he'd rip open the box to find out who sent you the gift. Not because he cared (Aizawa did but he was doing a good job at masking that) but because he didn't like something he didn't know the answer to. You bit the bullet as you felt the pressure.
You made sure to move the package into a better position away from their food before you started to open it. You slid the ribbon out of the way then lifted the eggshell-finished cardboard. Any nicer of a box and it might as well have been lacquered wood. The individual pieces were wrapped in soft tissue. You gingerly poked through them to see that the multiple pieces all worked together. It was a complete work out outfit. Including, you froze slightly at seeing it, a sports bra and underwear set. Somehow you really hoped that they were the wrong size. You could only think of a couple people who might have known your undergarment size accurately. And none of them would have sent you something like this.
