Chapter 49

"She said that?"

Tokoyami nodded and made a sound of acknowledgment as he stared ahead of himself intently. Everything in him roiled at the words his mentor had made him repeat. He wasn't one for crass language. Unless someone was about to kill his friends but even then....

Though he had never been heard cursing in public, Hawks didn't seem to have an issue with the language in particular. Normally hearing that someone called him an asshole wouldn't upset him. He might have been curious but not upset. Hearing that you had, however, was disheartening. Hawks' body collapsed even more into himself than before as he groaned. Which was saying something as he'd been dragging his legs in the air already.

"What occurred between the two of you?"

Hawks let out some air. Shrugging while flying didn't really have the same visual effect but he did it anyways.

"I don't know."

He did. Or at least he had a good idea about what happened. While trying to limit contact with you was for your own safety, he knew you weren't clued into his situation. No one other than a select few at the Hero Safety Commission was supposed to know. Which meant that you wouldn't get that he had just been doing his best to limit the trail back to you; make it hard for Dabi to organize people to move against UA just to get to you in order to mess with Hawks. Then after a while of stopping himself from texting you every morning at least, he'd given you the worst answer to your 40 week announcement. And he hadn't upheld his end of the donation.

Which meant to him that either you weren't pregnant or that you were and it just wasn't his. The thought that you believed he lied to you didn't help him narrow it down. You could have thought he lied to you because he'd implied he'd be donating as soon as possible to fulfill your desire to be pregnant right now. Or you could have been lied to by the commission if they'd extracted your egg without intending to put it back in and blamed him for that lie. Or you could have thought he lied because you were pregnant and it was another guys' after he told you he was your donor. None of the scenarios were very appealing. And seeing as you'd blocked his number he couldn't find out what happened, much less apologize for it.

Hence why he was questioning Tokoyami. The freshman was the closest source of intel he could currently get on you. The more information he had, the better. At least in theory. In practice all the information was a real buzz kill.

"I bet Eraserhead is loving the discord," Hawks said with a (very manly) pout as he resisted his first instinct.

Flying off to U.A to chase a teacher off the campus by any means necessary would be counter-productive. Thrice over actually. He was a pro hero too, he was helping to train more heroes, and that would tell Dabi and the rest of the league his current weakness. A fourth downside would be legal or social repercussions he might face but...somehow that didn't seem as serious the more he imagined how close Aizawa could have been to you right now.

"They have had a disagreement," Tokoyami informed him, looking over at his perturbed mentor in confusion.

Hawks turned his gaze to match his own. Understanding and acceptance slowly relaxed the frown on his face. His expression as he picked back up speed wasn't happy per say but Tokoyami would call it less unhappy than before.  He didn't have long to witness the change as Hawks quickly picked up speed in a dive - racing off to help someone on the streets below. Tokoyami just did his best to keep up with the hero deemed too fast for his own good.

You stood at the back of the room as the students in class 1B filed out for lunch. Normally you only joined the class for their hero studies, workouts, or other applicable classes but for the last couple of days, you'd forced yourself out of your room. It was part desperate attempt to move on with your life, part avoiding the nosy and perceptive girls from 1A. Sitting in with class 1B might have been a mistake though. While President Mic tried to make the last class interesting, sitting through a lecture-styled English class was not your idea of fun.
