Aspirations
Chapter 59

Hawks' place, as it turned out, wasn't exactly what you'd been picturing. You'd expected something vast and grand. You imagined he'd have momentos or trophies all over. Not only did his lack of visual boasting surprise you, the apartment was left with a rather lonely, unused feeling because there was no personal ornamentation. The only thing that matched what you expected was the floor to ceiling windows that made up one of the outer walls. While the apartment he brought you to was much larger compared to standard apartments, it didn't really seem like the second ranked hero put much stock into grand housing. Though even without any overstated grandeur, from what you could see, he hadn't spared any expense in keeping everything updated and modern.  In that way his show of presumed wealth was tastefully done.

"Can I use your phone?" You asked the number two hero politely.

Hawks blinked from his respectable distance behind you. He had been expecting a comment about the apartment. Or maybe a request for him to show you to a bed so you could get some rest. Perhaps some more small talk about your impromptu, forced liberation. You asking to call someone hadn't been anywhere near to top of his expectation list. Hawks tilted his head for a split second before letting out a sound of affirmation.

"Why not? It's over here," Hawks lead you to the house line, a wireless device resting on its narrow base by the front door.

You leaned back against the front door as you dialed. Hawks watched you from a few feet away, leaned against another wall that was shared with the kitchen. Considering that Hawks once again didn't have on his signature gear you figured he'd put them away when you'd been distracted by trying to remember the correct number to dial. Internally, as you stared at him, you cursed over the fact that you didn't have your cell phone. You also preyed you'd remembered the right number. It was going to seem really silly if you couldn't even remember the number of the person you wanted to call as Hawks kept his gaze trained on you. As he stared at you intently, one of his wings was pressed up against a wall as he leaned sideways onto it - a stark contrast against the white interior. The  graphic quality was only downplayed by the dim lighting in the barren apartment.

"Aizawa?" You questioned quietly, uncertainly, as the phone you dialed was finally picked up.

The sound of his voice spread relief through you faster than lightning. You were glad that you'd remembered the correct number.

"Where are you?"

"I'm safe," you decided to say first, reassuringly.

"Where?"

Though it had just been a repeat question, it was worth repeating. You knew that you were safe, relatively so, and you knew that you were with Hawks. You knew that you were at his home as well; you knew that it was in a really tall building. You just didn't know where in Japan that was, much less the actual address.

"Where are we?" You asked Hawks directly.

"At my apartment," the pro-hero said cheekily.

"Hawks, seriously."

"My agency."

"Which is where?" You probed.

To you he seemed mildly surprised. With good reason. The idea that you didn't know which area of Japan his agency in was surprising. Everyone in the hero business knew where the top hero agencies were! Except for you apparently. As the notion that you hadn't looked him up at all sank in, Hawks felt disappointed and more than a little sad. Wisely, he kept that to himself and just displayed the surprise.
