Chapter 73

The reception you'd gotten when you walked into the meeting room was expected. The two people in the room did not seem pleased that you were there. In fact the woman there, an older blond that had on a firmly pressed three piece suit, actually frowned. Her eyes looked critically towards the arm that Hawks had looped around you with his hand resting (practically gripping) your waist. You could definitely tell she was one of those people that detested PDAs and surprises. Which, of course, you were. Hawks had been the one summoned, not you. He hadn't even mentioned that he was bringing a tag along during that short conversation earlier.

Your vision of those in the room was light obscured by a mass of red as Hawks let the wing on your side curl around. If he'd done the same thing with the other wing he could have formed the impression of a heart. The thought of him taking a calendar picture for February crossed your mind. You had to bite your tongue and clench your jaw, rolling your lips, in order to avoid laughing aloud at that thought. It definitely wasn't the time or place to joke around.

Hawks turned his gaze to you inquisitive for a moment but you shook your head. There were far, far more important things to focus on right now. Namely the terrorist attack that Hawks had mentioned before dragging you along with him. Then the whole drug issue. The upcoming war. Hell, the piercing look that the woman was drilling you with was more important than the amusing image you'd just pictured.

"Who is this?"

Hawks introduced you quickly but calmly before moving on. With the way he was partially shielding you with his wing, you couldn't exactly do the customary greeting so it was probably best that he was speeding things along. Plus you started to get the impression that his reprieve was fading with how he was kneading up and down your side. Which made you realize that his shielding wing might not even have been for you; that alone made you feel like you'd just caught some of your own egocentrism rearing its head.

"You said the group Humarise set off a trigger bomb in Seoul," was how Hawks moved away from the whole introduction phase.

The woman seemed less pleased than before if that was possible. She looked sharply, angrily even, between Hawks and you. She was about to open her mouth but the other official in the room beat her to it.

"Perhaps it would be best if Ms. Shuzenji waited in the hallway."

Given Hawks' current behavioral trend, after having admitted to feeling "territorial", you had expected to be pulled in closer at that point. Hawks defied your expectations as he stayed in the exact same position. His blunt summary that followed did make you feel flustered.

"I was shot with the latest bullet while on assignment last night. So if you want to call me in, she's part of the deal. Otherwise, Madam President, I'll be logging in some sick days of my own."

"That's unacceptable," the blond female spoke authoritatively.

Hawks shrugged. His hand rubbed over your stomach for a moment before returning to your waist. "It's better than the lawsuits and bad publicity that'll follow."

"She's a civilian," the man reminded Hawks as though that fact hadn't occurred to the pro hero.

"About that," Hawks spoke slowly with a serious look on his face, "I need you to issue her a provisional license. Actually it'd be good if you could back-date that a couple days. Make the whole thing look more legit."

The President of the Hero Public Safety Commission was quiet. The man beside her was apparently the talkative one between the two of them. He looked as though he wanted to step forward and give Hawks a good shake to the shoulders. He didn't of course but there was something in his body posture that said he wanted to take action. That he was holding back for whatever reason.
