Aspirations
Chapter 41The sound of the door opening made you sit up at the front desk. You tried to calm your nerves as you looked up towards the very person you felt that you needed to talk to. As he walked in, Hawks removed his headphones and oversized sunglasses before setting them down on the reception desk where you were.
"Hey there, Chickadee," he greeted warmly.
You stood up slowly, nervously. The apprehension didn't go unnoticed by your boyfriend. The same boyfriend that you'd cheated on; one of the factors that had made you feel so horrible afterwards, even before you found out Aizawa's motivation.
Hawks' happy-go-lucky expression shifted as he stood before you. "What's wrong?"
"A lot," you answered honestly. "I'm...so so sorry."
You almost flinched away from him when he reached out. Hawks' concerned expression deepened as he kept his hands on your arms, holding you away for a moment. Slowly he pulled you forward and away from the desk so he could offer a better hug. Though even as he did you could tell he felt tense. Like he wasn't used to hugging people but was trying for your sake. Which was bizarre considering all of the touching that had gone on back at your room at the school a couple of days ago. The fact that he felt like he was pushing himself for your sake only made you feel worse. Though as he folded his wings around you, creating a warm cocoon, you couldn't help but bury yourself into the hold. As your arms wrapped around him in return, Hawks relaxed. You tucked your head into him, allowing him to rest against you.
"What happened? What's wrong?" Hawks asked one more time.
"I am a terrible girlfriend."
"You're the best I've ever had."
Your laugh was self deprecating as you spoke out, "I'm the only one you've ever had."
At least as far as you'd been told by him so far. Which made sense considering how focused he'd been on becoming such a big hero since he debuted. Though there was the chance that he could have kept a girlfriend or two a secret just like you were, you doubted it. People didn't tend to hold back secrets posthumously; breaking up tended to leave a bitterness on at least one side.
"Exactly. I only pick the best and I picked you. So no way are you a bad girlfriend."
He was so sweet. You felt like the worst person currently alive.
"I had sex with—" shit you didn't want to say who, "with...someone else."
Hawks was quiet. You tried to pull back but he just held you still. Trapped. That's how you felt. You wondered if he was strong enough to break you. You doubted it (he didn't have super strength) but in the panic of not being released you had considered such an outcome.
Could you heal from a broken spine? You didn't know —you'd never tried.
"When?" He asked quietly, his tone flat.
"Around lunch time."
Hawks slowly unfurled his wings. As he stepped back, hands slightly placed on elbows, you wished he'd kept you enveloped. You could see the look on his face and the serious stillness that had overtaken his eyes. With the sharp way the markings accented the golden orbs, he actually looked deadly. Which was a far cry from the gentleness you'd experienced so far.
"Aizawa?" Hawks asked quietly as he continued to stare at you.
Your mouth opened at the fact that he guessed so easily. You nodded. It took a minute to find your voice again but when you did, your habit of poking fun at yourself shined through.
