I was already creeping when she arrived home. I could hear the monstrous rumble of her trucks engine before I could see the hunk of metal- the tank, for better words. The noise could be heard from a mile away- literally. The sun had settled just far enough behind the horizon line that I was concealed in a misty twilight- the light blending with the the leaves to camouflage myself perfectly in the trees, just as I'd done a hundred other times. Her feeble human sight would never see me. Neither would Charlie's.

Her truck came into view, and I could hear her heart racing. Stress perhaps. Or even worse- something went wrong with Jacob.

My thoughts silently growled the horrible things I'd do to him if he'd caused her any harm. I watched her truck safely slip through the mud, parking messily outside the house. She allowed Charlie to take the parking spot, just as she usually did. Something was off though, her parking job was done extremely poorly, especially for Bella. Charlie would never notice- he wasn't observant enough, but I knew Bella. Something was off... I watched her swing her car door open with a force id never witnessed, scoop up all of her things as fast as her human skills could manage- it was as if she were running from a monster.

Jacob Black is a monster.

I watched her glance around, peering up the street quickly before slamming the tanks door. If she wasn't more careful with the doors she was sure to get tetanus from all that rust. I made a mental note to talk to her about it when we were on better terms.

Bella seemed more aware of her surroundings than usual. She peeked up the street one more time, her eyes concentrating for a moment on any upcoming noises.

To her relief, there was nothing. Only the breathless panting she'd begun as a result of all the hustle. That's when I realized.

Bella Swan, a girl who had hardly snuck around a day in her life, had made it out of class after faking sick, and Charlie would have been made aware of this. Lying to teachers- to Charlie even- it was new, unmarked territory for her. The sun was down, and he was due home any second. And Bella wouldn't be caught a liar- and she couldn't have that tarnish on her golden record; though Charlie would never see it that way. Even with as little time I'd spent in the police chiefs thoughts, I was sure he'd be pleased to see Bella acting like a normal teenager for once.

Bella ran across the lawn as best she could, careful not to slip in the wet grass but not careful enough; she stumbled on a root, then catching herself, she fumbled with her keys.

She let herself in.

Nearly as soon as the door slammed shut the familiar police cruiser rolled around the corner. Bella was unaware inside, but I could still hear her heart race as she dropped her stuff.

She knew Charlie would be home any second.

Listen to her struggle brought a soft, involuntary laugh from my chest. She was so slow- smallish almost- yet I knew she was impressed with her speed. She was so... un aware... that there were much faster things out there than a police cruiser. The sound I made was almost human. I watched eagerly as she flung her bedroom door open and dropped her stuff, waiting for her to hear Charlie open the door.

Three... two... one...

The look on Bella's face was again panicked as she heard the door. I watched her fling herself under her covers, ruffle up her hair and slouch back. She grabbed the beaten up book on her nightstand- Wuthering Heights- flicked it open and she began to read. Or pretend at least.
