Trigger Warning. (No major violence in this chapter, just a bit of a gross one.)« Edwards POV »
There she was; her hair cascaded down her back; brushed off her face so that I could see those crimson cheeks. Even when she did not blush there was an undertone of rose that I couldn't seem to get enough of. Her mind was elsewhere today. Usually when Bella was upset with me she'd be quiet and tense, and refuse to acknowledge me even until she was sure I wasn't looking, and she'd subtlety snag a glance. I always caught her, and those furious cheeks turned even redder. Today she was a different sort of quiet. Her mind was entirely preoccupied with something else; something other than me. I noticed that she kept fiddling with her motorcycle keys through lunch and even at the start of class. I found myself unable to look away from her, trying to peg all of my concentration into getting into her mind. I hoped that if I tried hard enough someday I'd be able to break that stubborn immunity and understand her.
She looked different today. Tired, but not exhausted. Bellas eyes didn't twinkle with that distant kind of pain they so often did either. It wasn't because of her lack of sleep or violent seeming nightmares. Last night after finally closing that laptop she fell asleep and didn't wake up again, only tossing on occasion. She seemed, in a sad sort of way, almost better rested than she had been yesterday.
Bella bit the end of her pencil and I noticed her eyes back on her keys, which she had left beside her pencil case on the corner of the lab table. Her eyes lingered specifically on the little brown wolf charm Jacob had given her.
There couldn't possibly be a way for Bella to have figured out that some of the Quileute tribe members are wolves.
I focussed again, trying hard to tune out the steady hum of my classmates thoughts. All I wanted was Bella's.
Usually when I watched her she would notice, and give me that frustrated yet endearing smile, but today she hadn't given me so much as a glance.
Here I was captivated and enthralled by this confusing girl, and she, for the first time in a long time, was captivated by something else. Not me. It was selfish of me to want all of her attention on me and I knew that, but it didn't stop me from wanting it anyways.
Bella was my greatest desire.
Finally after a quick, ten minute introduction to how the natural decomposing process worked, the class moved forward with what Banner referred to as a little surprise. After a quick glance into his mind I saw the surprise he had planned for the class today; live earth worm dissection. Revolting, but something I'd done multiple times throughout my other high school lives, so I could bare it.
Poor Bella's reaction to this was sure to be priceless though.
"Today I have a very special treat." He grinned. It was our first dissection of the school year. Later on in the semester he had ordered both frogs and closer to the exam fetal pigs planned for us to sink our knives into. Banner walked up and down the lab station isles as he spoke, handing out packages of papers. "We will be doing a surprise dissection." At every lab station he placed two live worms in a little container. "With nature's great composters, Oligochaeta, also known as earthworms. These ones are from my own back yard."
Banner placed the little specimen containers in front of Bella and I, and her deep thinking was over. She looked horrified, and suddenly much more pale than usual. She eyed the small, fat worm as it wriggled in her container. She pushed the second container over to me, still not looking at me or even thinking about me.
For a reason I was sure I'd never know, the worm in front of bella had flipped a switch in her brain, and a panic set in. Even though she managed to keep her cool on the outside Bella's heartbeat speed up, and her breathing subtlety hitched.
