- SydForks high school. September 5th 2008.
First day of school.•
The school parking lot was crowded with cars, and I had to drive around for a couple minutes to find a spot big enough for my awkwardly sized truck. It was a gift from Charlie last year when I first arrived here in Forks. Not everybody had a car, of course, and the school busses were unloading by the front entrance.
"Bella!" A voice called before a person jogged up beside me. It was Jessica Stanley, one of the first friends I made when I first moved here. Our friendship was not strong, and I found out quickly that she was the type of girl who made her whole life about gossip. At first, I thought it was crazy that I was such a hot topic for gossip, but eventually I realized that the most exciting thing to happen at Forks high school is the occasional school dance.
"Hey Jess." I smiled, trying hard to be friendly. Jessica was frustrating, but I had always been thankful that she invited me to sit with her and her friends at lunch on that first day. I was shy, and it was difficult for me to make friends usually. After that first lunch time, my social group seemed to steady out and for the first time in my life I wasn't considered the least popular student in the world. I was considered one of the most. "How was your summer?"
Jessica quickly launched into a detailed review of her summer, and of how she had started a summer romance with Mike Newton, a football player. I didn't pay much attention to the story because honestly, I didn't really care. I gave her nods and ohs and ahs but I had somehow successfully fooled her into thinking I was listening. Romance was never something I was good at, or even considered an opinion for me. Most of the time when people asked me who I had a crush on, I would either tell them nobody, which was never believed, or I'd just say the name of whichever boy was most crushed on to avoid questions. It was always awkward and uncomfortable for me. The only boy I'd ever truly been attracted to was Alice's brother Edward, but he couldn't even stand to look at me so I didn't bother to get my hopes up.
"Bella, you like, got hot over summer." Jessica observed, breaking me out of my train of thought. I was shocked to see that she was looking down at my body closely as if picking it apart almost jealously. Nobody had ever said anything like that to me before, and instinctively I crossed my arms over my chest self consciously.
"I look the exact same." I argued as my head shook uncomfortably. I was hoping she'd pick up on the fact that I wanted her to stop, but Jess was not one for picking up on most things unless said out loud.
"No your chest and your ass are definitely bigger." Jessica decided firmly as she peeled around to look at my behind. How embarrassing. It was no secret that she did not know how to take a hint, and I was too awkward to tell her to stop. Instead Jessica went into another full blown rant about she was going to give me a make over and help me find a romance of my own for senior year, and I once again zoned it all out.
By the time lunch rolled around I realized that Jessica was actually right. Boys were looking at me in ways they never had before, their eyes lingering. Some girls even looked almost jealous at the attention I was getting. I felt similar to how I did when I first got here, uncomfortable with the attention.
I was on my way to the cafeteria when Alice came up beside me, her gothic heels clicking. We didn't speak much during the school day because of the Cullens reputation at school, and she liked to keep alone with her family. The truth was if we hadn't bumped into each other on the second day of school last year we probably never would have been friends.
