« Bellas POV »

"No, thank you." I shook my head politely, pursing my lips. It was a god awful smell. The stranger, seemingly only a few years younger than me, shrugged. He tilted back his head, chugging down the alcohol he'd so graciously offered me. Then drunkenly, he danced off. He grinned up at the moon, only days away form being full, and let out a loud howl. Like a wolf. How odd. Alcohol, as I had tried to tell him, was not my scene. And Charlie would be so disappointed if he saw me take a drink from a stranger. I trusted Jake, well sort of, and by connection his friends. But I'd also read about what happened to girls who accept drinks from strangers in books, or seen the horrific scenes play out in movies. I didn't want to take that risk.

"You're still being uptight, Bells." Jake groaned, sneaking up behind me. His arms wrapped around my waste and he land his chin on my shoulder. I tried to ignore the stench, reminding myself that this was exactly the situation I signed up for when I agreed to come to this party.

I turned to face him as he straightened up, spinning away from the drunken boy who'd offered me the drink. The one who'd bowled.

"I'm not trying to turn into him." I motioned behind me and Jakes eyes landed on the boy. He appeared younger than everybody else, perhaps a young teenager who'd lost control at his first party. He was sloppy, and dancing, occasionally playing an air guitar or spinning in a circle.

"Oh, Crap. Leahs going to kill me." Jake mumbled, forgetting all about how uptight I was. He headed for the boy, who seemed to be having the time of his life. As he walked off he murdered what I presumed to be the boys name under his breath. "Seth."

I followed after him, worried he was going to explode at the younger boy. He sounded stressed. He was irresponsible, and reminded me in a sad way of Jake at that age.

"Come on Seth. I'm taking you home." Jake reaches out and carefully grabbed the smaller boys arm. "Now."

"You're not my brother, Jake." Seth growled. He sounded as if something from a previous argument was being brought up, and Jake gave a sympathetic sigh. "I'm old enough to do all of these things too, you know. I'm old enough to hunt, and to fight, and I'm old enough to be here."

"You're fifteen." Jake sighed. I was surprised at how smoothly he was handling his frustration. It was almost sweet to see him act like a big brother.

"You were only a year older than me when you phased!" Seth broke away from Jakes grasp, and his eyes filled with frustrated tears. He quickly brushed them away. I shared that awful, humiliating quality. Tears came with any strong emotion for me. I suppose the fifteen year old boy was similar.

I frowned at his words though, confused by what he mean. You were only a year older than me when you phased. What was phasing? My brain worked quickly, but trying hard to connect the dots was more difficult than it seems. Especially with such little information.

Phased. You phased

It was bewildering. To phase was to change from one thing to another- scientifically at least- and it didn't seem to apply here. Not in a way that made sense. No, nothing ever seemed to make sense here.

"You phased?" I asked, looking up to Jake. I watched the muscles in his face tighten with stress. He was hiding something, or I'd found out something I wasn't suppose to know. "What does that mean?"
