« Edward's POV »

I turned back to my locker, giving Bella the same false feeling of privacy I let everybody else feel. My ears were perked and senses were heightened though, more so than usual, and I prepared myself for tuning out the thoughts of my idiotic classmates. I had to listen only to Jacob and Bella's phone conversation, no matter how wrong it may be. He was going to destruct her. And I couldn't allow that to happen. As wrong as I knew it was, it had to be done. I couldn't let her risk her life, her everything, my everything. I had to protect it.

I had to protect her.

I'd vowed to do so, and letting Jacob get in the way of that was simply something I couldn't allow. He was so unhealthy for her, and he kicked her trauma up like sand at the bottom of the ocean. And my poor, beautiful Bella was too hurt herself to see anything happening.

"What's up, Jake?" Bella asked, her voice cheerful as she turned away from me. I could tell she was smiling, and I didn't like thati didn't like that he was making her smile. I focused on tuning out the screeches of lockers slamming shut, and the obnoxious charters of my peers. All that mattered was my Bella.

"Stay at the Rez tonight." Jakes voice was firm, and his words were unexpected. Bella was quiet, thinking of how to respond to such an unpredictable question. "A couple of us are having a little bonfire get together when the parents are asleep, and to sweeten the deal; we can go out riding too."

As far as I was aware Bella hadn't been to a single party in all of her high school career. She had said before she wasn't the party type; or even the majorly social type. Bella was quiet, and didn't enjoy attention. I knew that chances were she'd feel uncomfortably out of place at a party. There was an unspoken promise of alcohol; something I'd realized upset Bella weeks ago. It was detrimental, and Jacob was a promise for disaster. The whole pack was.

"A party Jake? Really?" She laughed cynically. "Not so much my scene and Its technically a school night too." Bella said. She was so sensible and smooth; yet also so awkward. I couldn't help but admire the way she considered Friday night a school night. It was adorable. Alice would have her head if Bella said anything like that in her presence.

"It's a Friday night, Bells. AKA the weekend." Jacob groaned from the other end of the line. I frowned at the way he complained. It was so genuine, and rude. A party wasn't Bella's scene at all, and if he truly knew her he would know it. Bella didn't drink or dance. She was quiet. "Loosen up a little, just for tonight. You'll thank me later."

Bella sighed, contemplating the offer.

Was she truly considering a night that would be so self destructive? Perhaps she was blinded, and didn't see the damage such a thing could have on her- or perhaps that was what she wanted, wether subconsciously or not

"I'll think about it." She said finally. I wasn't completely satisfied with her answer but was glad it wasn't a solid yes. I had to keep her away from the Rez. Whenever she hung out alone with Jake she came back feeling visibly worse, looking even more exhausted, and she even shyed away from me a little more. It was like her instincts were in check; not because I was a blood thirsty vampire, but instead because I was- to her atleast- an ordinary human man. Maybe I could sweep her up for the night myself- that way I could be sure she was alright. If I could convince her to stay over- perhaps study or watch a movie, she would definitely be okay. She may even get a good night of rest too. A positive reaction, or a yes from her was unlikely but certainly still worth a shot. I had to try.
