Chapter ??? - Decisions.

Day 152

I stayed with the limp black furball until he started to disintegrate into sparkling white ashes. It looked a bit like snow: the way it shone in the sunlight and danced around in flakes as the breeze carried it away. Only his blood and the sopping bandage was left around me, and a faint grey patch where he had lay. The smell of death, recognisable, crept up into my nose and will linger there for quite some time. My tears had already dried on my cheeks, and sighing, I got to my feet.

After picking up my beloved axe and sliding it back into its holder, then slinging my bag over my shoulders, I started to head back towards the way I came. I ran what I’d say to Jamie through my head.

Sorry, Lucifer is gone. Sorry, I killed him, but I panicked. Calm down, Jamie, I’m sorry, I’m really sorry. Tears won’t bring him back, sorry. Sorry, sorry, sorry.

If you don’t want me to stay, then I’ll leave.

Please don’t kill me.

I ran my hand through my tangled hair, only worsening the knots, as I looked around. There is no good way to tell her. I might as well just come out and say it. Where’s Avery?

The midday sun beat down on the plants in speckles of hot light, turning the leaves shades of lime and mint, like mint ice cream. My mouth filled with saliva just thinking of it. Mmm… All I want is some ice cream. Although the sun is as clear as mid-july, it gives no heat whatsoever. It should be about… October now. Back home it would be raining non stop, Mama and I would be carving pumpkins in anticipation for halloween. I mean, halloween can’t be that far away. Toffee apples..

Get it together. Get back on track. Gotta find Avery.

“Avery?” I called, when I reached the end of my trampled bloodied trail and back to where I committed the shameful act. Looking around, I couldn’t see her, or her crazy coloured clothes anywhere. So I looked for the trail she inevitably left behind her: a trail of broken stalks and trampled leaves.

Of course it went in the complete opposite direction I had gone before. I followed the path carefully, trying not to destroy any other plant life. I don’t know why I did it, but it was sort of fun, tracing Avery’s uncertain footsteps.

It took a while before I reached Avery at the end of the path. To be honest, I didn’t notice her until we were an inch apart, since I was too focused on tracing her footsteps. I straightened up instantly when I realised she was holding her breath. She probably heard me approach.

We stood there in silence until I reached out and poked her. The blind girl let out an all mighty shriek, slapping and scratching me with her nails. “GET AWAY!!” She squawked.

I slapped her hands away, shielding my face with my forearm. “Hey, get a grip!! It’s me!! Seriously, calm down.”

Her screeching and flapping instantly died down to an, “Oh.”

“Yeah… Sorry for running off like that.” I said, lowering my arms. She listened around, probably for Lucy.

“Where’s Lucy?” She asked, looking around with dead milky eyes.

I bit my lip, struggling to find the words, although they were painstakingly simple. “I…  killed him.”

Her face dropped like a stone. “Killed him? W-Why? Poor Jamie…” She said, slapping my chest.
