 Chapter ??? - Rescue

 My eyes are stinging..

My chest, my head, oh god!

I pushed off the floor with my hands and sent myself whirling up to the surface. As my head broke through, I felt the warm sun on my face and I stuck my chin up and hacked and coughed, trying to get the water from my lungs. Tears streamed down my face as I kept my eyes closed. The dirt stung my eyes.

I eventually forced my eyes open. As my teeth chattered and I thrashed around in the water, I looked for Sadie.

“SADIE!” I yelled as loudly as I could, panic rising within me once again. Jordie and Sofia were no longer visible, and the tree was racing down after me like a death machine. My yelling was swiftly followed by some gurgling coughs.

My feet started dragging along the pebbles, and soon I was rolling out onto a slab of rock. It was warm, and I relished in that warmth for a brief moment, before I rolled off again to escape the tree.

Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a blonde head. “SADIE!” I yelled again, my voice quivering with the cold. I shuddered and hurriedly swum my way over to her, narrowly escaping the tree trunk and being swept down the river further. She was shivering and clinging to a root with pale muddy fingers.

“K-Kieran! W-Why did you… d-do that?!” Sadie said, narrowing her eyes at me accusingly. I grabbed onto another root, breathing heavily and resting my head against my numbing hands.

“I-I had to… Y-You would’ve been.. crushed otherwise.” I shivered, feeling my hoodie’s knot loosen. I grabbed it with one hand, keeping my other gripping firmly onto the root.

“H-How do we get out?” She asked, her eyes wide and watery with fear, and her lips turning blue. I shook my head and closed my eyes, still trying to get my breath back.

“I-I don’t know, Dimples. I d-don’t know.” I sighed. I don’t know why I called her Dimples, I haven’t called her that in a very long time. Not since the huge fight we had over nothing at all. I guess it was just instinct. When we were younger, her nickname was Dimples because of her dimples, Jordie’s was Tarzan for his love of gorillas, Sofia’s was… Ketchup! Yeah, because all she’d eat was ketchup sandwiches. Mine was Ducky, I think, I can’t remember why though.

I opened my eyes as she gave me a watery smile, “You haven’t called me that in ages… I thought you’d forgotten.”

I chuckled shakily, I can hardly feel my feet. “Nah, course not.” I said, hearing something from far away. What was that?

“Mamaaa!” Was what that sounded like. I can hardly hear it, but it’s sort of high pitched.

 “Maamaaa!” Was a lower one.

“Kieraaan?!” Mama? N-No, that’s stupid. It’s not her.

My heart weighed heavy with sadness, my mind is cruel enough to betray me in this way.

That could be the others, come to look for us. It wouldn’t surprise me. Can they hurry up, please? I’m freezing here!

“Kieraaaaan?!” It was far away, still, but that’s definitely Sofia’s voice.

 “Saaaadie!!” There’s Jordie.

 “Saaaaaadie?!!” Sofia. Slightly closer.
