Chapter ??? - The Real Level One

I stormed away from my friends, ignoring them calling my name. I wish I had my headphones about now, so I could ignore them properly.

Footsteps hurried behind me and Sofia grabbed my arm, harshly yanking me to a stop. Snatching my hand away, I glared down at her.

“What.” I said coldly. Can’t she see I’m f*cking angry?

How dare he? That a*shole. He thinks he can pin it all on me and act all high and mighty, huh? Well let’s see how far he gets without my help.

She looked at me, with hard brown eyes and an emotionless face. Her eyes showed the annoyance and desperation she was containing. Her vibrant hair lay tangled on her shoulders, and there was a leaf in her hair.

“You both need to calm the hell down. Storming off won’t help the argument. It makes you immature.” She said, evidently annoyed by my snippy tone of voice. I fished the leaf from her hair as she spoke, and she grabbed my hand, twisting it.

Sharp spikes of pain shot through my wrist but I’m too f*cking pissed to care. I shrugged at her, giving her a challenging look. She twisted it further.

Okay, now this really hurts. But no way am I giving in. HE’s the one in the wrong here, not me.

“Go on, break it. Let’s find a healing potion and see if it’ll fix it.” I said rapidly, with a harsh sarcastic laugh added to the end. She widened her eyes in shock and dropped my wrist. Hunching my shoulders, I crossed my arms.

 Then I stopped.

She looked so upset. Sofia was turned away from me slightly, her hair covering her face halfway. Her eyes were so sad. She looked as if she’d cry again.

I took in a deep breath and relaxed my shoulders, closing my eyes and uncrossing my arms. “I’m sorry.” I mumbled, holding my arms out to hug her. Naturally, she refused, and I hugged her anyway. “He just… pissed me off.”

“I can tell.” Sofia replied quietly. I rested my chin on her head and she snorted in protest. Although Sadie is just as tall as me, Sofia is about a head shorter, and hugging her like this annoys her. So it’s the right way to hug her. “I’m not a head rest.”

With that, she pinched my arm and twisted. Ow. I winced and hugged her more tightly, chuckling. She made a kind of ‘meep’ noise, as she ducked out from beneath me and left me holding onto air. As I fell forward, my head rest gone, she laughed and ran down the path. I frowned a little, jogging after her.

This is comforting. Just like normal, like we went to hang out in the forest. The steadiness of my breath and heartbeat seems unnatural now, after all that’s happened. All I’ve been through. I don’t know about them, but I’m glad they’re here too. Well, apart from a certain someone. My time would be a ton less stressful if he was never here.

She eventually ran out of breath, and I caught up to her, patting her on the back once and slowing to a walk. “You okay?” I asked, looking at her. Straightening up and looking at me, she nodded.

“Uh huh.” She said, holding a hand to her side. “Got a stitch.”

I wrinkled my nose in confusion. “A stitch? Don’t you only get those if you eat, then do exercise?” As far as I can tell, there hasn’t been any food chests around here. Also, if it’s the twenty second of May, the last time we ate was dinner yesterday. What time is it?
