Chapter ??? - Alone.

Day 1

They left me…

How could they?!

What kind of friends are these, if they leave me like this?!

Jordie, you f*cking pr*ck. Have fun getting yourself killed, thick skulled motherf*cker.

This is all his f*cking fault. Completely.

I growled as I kicked the pile of ash away, my vision blurred with angry tears. There were probably other emotions causing them, but anger is the main one.

How could they?! How could they?! How could they?!!

F*CK.

I picked up a bag of mouldy breadcrumbs and hurled it into the nearest tree, instantly spraying the disgusting substance around. GODDAMMIT!

They just left me! How could they?!

I threw another.

How could they?! Jordie, you f*cking b*stard!!

I don’t know how you did it, but you convinced the girls to leave me here. Sly little pr*ck.

Sighing, I closed my eyes, still holding the last bag of breadcrumbs.

Get a hold of yourself. You’re stuck here. Alone. The sooner you realise that the better.

I dropped the bag on the ground and picked up my hoodie, still a little damp, and pulled it over my head. The material made my skin clammy, but I didn’t take it off. Rays of sunlight were beating down on the clearing, and the path ahead, it won’t be long till it dries off.

Right, so they took the map. I suppose I just have to start walking. Seeing as it’s f*cking unlikely they’re coming back, I better get a move on.

Sighing again, I turned and looked at the path ahead. I took few steps towards the path, and stuck my hands in my pockets. Before I left the clearing, I looked back for I don’t know what reason. Green specks covered an area on the edge of the clearing, and a smudge of black in the center. Then the message, almost unreadable from where I stood. Almost.

I gritted my teeth and took swift steps over to the message. Then I started scraping my foot over the message, erasing it. Rubbing it out of existence.

They’d just be extra weight. You can do this by yourself.

But what about the next level?

Oh god, I can’t do this by myself. I’ve never killed anything in real life before. I’ve never fought in real life before, well, except the bully incident and that fist fight with Jordie. Oh, and maybe that time I pulled a girl's hair in year four. All hell broke loose that day. I’m nowhere near ready.

F*ck it. Let’s just go.

With the message gone, and the clearing covered in dust and other things, I turned and left the area.

I just started walking. Walking, walking, walking.

The scenery is much of the same. Knee high ferns, round topped trees with white bark, the odd bird, cartoony clouds. It’s almost real, the only thing reminding me of the game is the sky. No stars at night, cartoon clouds offering no rain during the day.

I spotted a glinting object, hidden in the branches of a tree. Grinning, I jogged over to it and reached up to knock it down. Just out of reach. I moved back a little, and jumped, grabbing hold of the branch it perched itself on, and pulling it down as I landed. The branch had lots of twigs and leave splitting off it, and they got in my face as I moved the branch up and down, up and down, wiggling it.

Eventually, the chest toppled off the branch and landed in the grass and ferns with a soft thump.

Success.

I opened the chest. Mouldy bread, a canteen of water and glass bottle full of electric blue liquid. My first health potion.

So there are still health potions. Hm. Did we get that health potion at the very start of the game? No, I doubt that. Unless the others had a confrontation with the strange man. I don’t think this would follow the story, though, would it? Ah what would I know.

How do they even work? Do they completely heal you with no consequences? Cause if that’s the case, you just need to stock up on a load of these, and you’ll be fine. But, maybe they don’t heal really serious things. Or maybe if you have a load of injuries it can only heal some of them. Do you have to drink the whole potion for it to work? What does it taste like? Hm…

Is it just like a fruit juice, with no effect?

Maybe I should test it out. I don’t have anything sharp enough to cut my hand or anything, though. I could break my finger, but that’s a bit far fetched. Not to mention painful. Also if the potion didn’t work I wouldn’t be able to mend myself. Would biting my tongue super hard work?

I stuck my tongue out, and looked at it for a few moments, before looking up.

"HUH?!"

Floating above my head was now a green bar and a yellow bar. They looked like they were in glass tubes, green above yellow, with some kind of swirling coloured gas inside. They didn’t have symbols to tell them apart, but what they were were obvious enough. The green, health. Yellow, hunger. My hunger is dark yellow to orange coloured, and half full. My health only has a sliver missing.

I put my tongue back in my mouth.

It’s strange. I feel like I shouldn’t be able to see the green, since the yellow is in the way, but when I tried looking at it, it was like I could see through the yellow gas and into the green. It was weird, like I had x-ray vision or something. Cool!!

Slowly, I stood up, looking at the bars. They floated above my head ominously. I side stepped left, the two bars followed me, and again. Wherever I moved, they were there. I lay on the floor on my back, but they remained above me, hovering above my face.

“Wow…” I whispered, reaching up to touch it. This is, admittedly, a gamer’s dream. To be inside a game. I’m truly inside a game. This is insane. To my surprise, I reached the bar.

My hand went right through. But where I ‘touched’ the floating thing, it felt cold, and the area my hand ‘touched’ glowed a faint blue. A tingling sensation flooded through my fingers, like pins and needles on a smaller scale. It was... beautiful, in a way.

Already I felt less lonely. Although it sounds strange.

I let my arm drop beside me, and smiled up at the bars above me, before I went back to my loot and picked up the bread and health potion. A few moments of consideration told me to shove the objects in my pockets and I sat on the floor to drink my water under the blazing sun.

I closed the chest, put my canteen away, and continued walking.

What a great way to spend my birthday.

I walked all day. All evening. All night.

No stopping. Only for chests. Not even for sleep.

I don’t want to think what dreams I’ll have.

There’s no longer any need to stop.

 Just keep going.

 Keep walking.
