Chapter ??? - Displacement.
We walked endlessly. Wandering around and around, searching for Derren and Chris. Karcsi and Elliot chatted in the front, and I stayed behind with Evan.
I looked at him. "So what's your story?" I asked. He just looked at me blankly, shrinking into his red scarf. His dark brown hair fell over his eyes as he looked at me. He was pretty short and skinny, more so than me.
"We think he might be mute. He doesn't talk at all. Although he might not speak English or something." Elliot said, shrugging.
"So how do you know he's called Evan?" I said, raising an eyebrow and putting my hands in my hoodie pockets. Oh, how my muscles ache.
"His name's in the hoodie he's wearing." He shrugged. "It might not be his real name, but it's easier just to assume it is."
I looked back at Evan, still looking at me with slightly cloudy eyes. He seemed to look past me. "Do you speak English?"
He didn't seem to pay attention. I thought.
"Do you speak Spanish?" I asked in Spanish. His eyes lit up and he looked straight at me. I nodded, urging him to answer. He didn't answer, though.
I thought long and hard. I did learn German at school, but I'm not good at it. "Uh... Do you... speak... German?" I asked in what I assume to be just very badly spoken German.
He laughed a little, holding his scarf over his mouth, muffling the sound.
"Whaaaaaat?" I looked at him. "I mean... Uh..."
I thought. "Waaaaaaas?" I said.
"Ihr Deutsch ist sehr schlecht." He said quietly. I thought. 'Schlecht' means bad. So I assume that means 'Your German is very bad''.
"Woah, he talks?" Elliot said, looking at Evan.
"Well, obviously not in English. Trouble is, my German isn't great. That's why I dropped it for my GCSE's." I said.
"What're GCSE's?" He asked.
"Exams. Really important ones." I said.
"Oh, right." He responded, and just kept walking. I could see his knives peeking out from below his red bodywarmer, and the stains on his trousers. He had pale scars and scratches up and down his dark arms, and black earrings in one ear. Two small hoops near the top and I'm pretty sure he had a stretcher-like disc in his lobe. I noticed he had a dagger on a strap on his leg, and a black beaded bracelet on his wrist. He certainly did carry a lot of knives. He must have a habit of losing them.
I looked back at Evan. "What..." I began in german. How on earth do you say languages in German? Nationality? Now I think of it, I don't even know how to say other countries in German. I only know how to say Deutchsland, and that doesn't help anybody.
He looked back at me, dark eyebrows furrowed in confusion. I glanced at Karcsi. "I take it he doesn't speak French, then."
"Non." Was all she replied, picking at the ear of her panda phone case.
I sighed, looking back at Evan. Having no other option, I went back for Spanish. "What languages do you speak?"
He paused silently for a small while, then said in a small voice, "German, Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin, Latin. I am learning English, but I was taken away to this place. I can understand what they say, a little, but I cannot understand big words, or the word 'swag'."
I laughed softly, "You know all that, but not English? Wow. Can you write in Japanese or Mandarin?"
He shook his head, "The, er, characters are confusing. I know most of the characters, but everything is very formal. I'm scared of talking in English, because I am German, and I don't want to offend anyone."
