A young woman of small stature walked slowly, stepping on the wet grass one foot at a time with her hand loosely wrapped around the wooden handle of a pink umbrella.

A small, absentminded smile was on her face as she hummed a random tune, an old song from days when she would wear that white and checkered blue uniform every day from Monday to Saturday.

She stopped walking in the middle of the grassy field and inhaled deeply while closing her eyes.

The scent of rainkissed leaves always reminded her of that day, many years ago.

The day she first saw that pink umbrella.

It was just another bad day after a test she couldn’t do and lessons she couldn’t understand. There was nothing special about it until the sky suddenly turned dark when she wasn’t even halfway home.

A chuckle escaped her lips when she remembered how frantically she ran as drops of water began to trickle, hitting her head, shoulders and nose.

She had made a hasty decision to cut through the small park in the hopes of getting home faster.

Unfortunately, the weather had other things in mind and the rain suddenly poured down, drenching her from top to toe.

Her feet slowed down to a walk. There was no need to run now that she was wet anyway, she thought.

She was stopping to tie her shoes, kneeling down on the grassy field, when her eyes caught sight of a pair of dark blue boots, coming to a halt in front of her.

She lifted her head and saw a girl her age, wearing a different uniform and holding a pink umbrella.

“You’ll get sick, Taeyeon.”

The sound of her name surprised her and she stood up, keeping her eyes on the girl. “Who are you? How do you know my name?”

“We live on the same floor. My family just moved in last month.”

“Oh?”

“Your mother told me about you and I’ve seen you around a few times.”

“Ah. You’re that Hwang girl. Sorry. Didn’t recognize you.”

“It’s okay. You didn’t bring an umbrella?”

“No.”
