Starlight – 2: Coming Home

"Oh wow those bedsheets look like my Grandma's!" Taeyeon hears Tiffany say and can't help but smile. It's been quite a long time since she last heard her cheerful voice. It feels so good that her body tingles with the familiarity of it all and because of the rush of emotions that have been rampaging in her heart and mind ever since she got Tiffany's page this morning.

Slowly, she turns around and watches her drop her bag and take off her denim jacket before lying down on the bed. It's unbelievable to see her there, to be in the same room with her. She has missed her very much and it had crossed her mind that she might not see her again. That thought scared her so much that she had to do something uncharacteristic which led to her leaving town for a couple of days of spontaneous road trip, alone.

She wants to join her on that bed, sit next to her and hold her hand or hug her. But there's still that doubt in her heart and the awkwardness in the air so she controls herself, closes the door and walks out to the balcony, needing a breath of fresh air.

The moment she steps out, she takes a deep breath and exhales.

She closes her eyes and leans against the railing, looking at the sky and the ocean, searching for some kind of peace and wisdom to do or say the right thing when the time comes—whatever those might be.

In that moment, she can't help but think about everything that has happened and how they got to that point. From being each other's best friend, to each other's significant other and then back to mere friends before not even seeing or speaking to each other for months.

The same old haunting regrets resurface, jabbing painfully at her already broken heart. Had she been more attentive or expressive, had she listened to her and not be so wrapped up in her own future plan, she probably wouldn't have lost her.

Now she doesn't know what Tiffany wants and if the girl is here to tell her that she's moved on; and frankly, she's not sure she's ready to say goodbye for good. Even the thought of forever parting with the brunette is making her eyes tear up.

She tilts her head, lets the passing breeze blow her hair back and inhales, closing her eyes as her mind wander to their better days.

Taeyeon swings her feet, feeling the tightness from the elastic bandage wrapped around her one ankle. Her brows are furrowed as she observes the hot dog in her hand, not happy with how it looks. But there's something else that's been bothering her lately and the lack of sauce on her food fades in comparison.

She's been observing Tiffany and their friendship very closely lately thanks to a sudden flutter she felt when the brunette hugged her to wish her a happy new year. It was as if a veil was abruptly lifted and she started to see her best friend in a different way. Everything Tiffany did, everything Tiffany was, was so mesmerizing that it took everything in her not to kiss her that night.

She tried to push that thought to the back of her mind but it keeps haunting her so after her uncle made his usual remark about them being abnormally close yesterday—plus Tiffany's very gentle gesture of wrapping her sprained ankle earlier—she decided that she should ask the girl about it today.

She knows that they love each other and care for each other, they're each other's special person so why are they still just friends? Why aren't they together? They make such a good couple too.
