It started at that birthday party they attended last week. Most of their friends were there so they were mingling comfortably in a familiar atmosphere, enjoying the conversations that came their way.

However, unknown to Tiffany who was assisting the birthday girl in handling a sudden wardrobe malfunction before the cake cutting, Taeyeon suddenly found herself cornered and bombarded with questions that she was not expecting to hear at all.

She blamed her friend Jessica who tactlessly blurted out about her intention to propose to Tiffany on her birthday to their close group of friends.

“Sshh! It’s a secret!” she told them, “I don’t want her to find out so let’s not talk about this. Not here. Not now.”

“Are you sure about this though?” Sunny asked. “I mean, I don’t want to discourage you or anything but you haven’t been dating for that long.”

“I agree. Do you even know if she wants this too? Have you guys talked about it?” added Yuri.

“We did. A little bit. Once. A while ago,” said Taeyeon. “Come on. We’ve been living together for months! Isn’t this the logical next step?”

“Well yeah but only if you’re really sure about it. I personally think that you need to live together for at least a year before you really get to know a person. Right now, she might still be hiding some stuff from you that you might not like,” Sooyoung said. “Besides, I’d like to think that it’s okay to slow down a bit, like Soonkyu said.”

“Yeah. This kind of commitment is not exactly an easy one to break,” added Hyoyeon. “You must be 100% sure that you’re willing to put up with her for the rest of your life and vice versa.”

“That’s the point I’m most concerned about. Don’t get me wrong, I love you both but Fany has never been in a serious long-term relationship before. I was quite shocked when she agreed to move in with you and I’m glad to see that everything turned out okay so far but I honestly don’t know how she’d react to this,” Sunny said.

“We just don’t want you to get hurt, Taeng,” Jessica spoke, calming her stunned friend. “Maybe you should wait a bit. Drop more hints about this, talk to her and see where she stands on the matter before you pop the question.”

Her friends nodded in agreement and the happy bubble Taeyeon had been living in popped just like that.

She knew of Tiffany’s past, of course. In fact, they met when they were both in a relationship with other people. Taeyeon was secretly seeing her intern while Tiffany was dating some rich guy she met through Jessica.

Sunny introduced them to each other and it took a couple of years before Taeyeon confessed, right after Tiffany had broken up with her second boyfriend of that year. It was actually a semi-drunken dare that Taeyeon had agreed to and couldn’t get out of. She wasn’t expecting Tiffany to say yes but, luckily, she did. Since then, Taeyeon had developed a strong belief that Tiffany had changed, that she wasn’t really a player after all –in Tiffany’s own words, she just had too many crushes– and what they had was different, especially since they decided to live together. Hence the courage and confidence to take it to the next level.
