Stars

Tiffany is not an outdoor person. She has never gone up a mountain to see the night sky filled with stars and despite being a self-proclaimed romantic with a deep fondness for love stories, she has come to accept the fact that most of the things she saw in those books and movies would never happen to her. That they're too much of a cliché and completely unreal.

But that conviction starts to waver when her heart starts to beat faster every time her eyes meet her best friend's or when said best friend smiles at her. There are goose bumps on her arms and an anxious twist in her stomach when her best friend's fingers brush her skin.

She'd find herself thinking of her during the weirdest hours of the day and at the most random moments, driving her crazy for she is not used to such "unreasonable foolishness".

She met this friend many years ago. Her name is Taeyeon and unlike her loud cheerful self, Taeyeon is more reserved and less outgoing. But when it's just the two of them, she'd get to see sides of Taeyeon not many know about: how she can be witty, funny and cheeky with no restrictions or fear.

They accept each other for what they are and over the years, they've come to understand each other so well that it only takes one glance to know what the other person's thinking. Their bond is strong, deep and secure; developed through years of not only happy moments but also arguments and fights that, fortunately, never last long though some would turn into a loud shouting match before they reconcile with unspoken apologies that are instead expressed through caring gestures.

What they have is special and rare, that they know. Even their friends have mentioned how much they envy the bond these two share.

Tiffany has noticed that, right from the start, there's always been something in Taeyeon's eyes and expression that ignites warmth in her heart. Something that calms and comforts her.

Often, when their eyes meet, she'd unconsciously break into a smile even though there's nothing funny going on around them. Taeyeon would do the same and they'd end up snickering together under the stares of their other friends who don't understand what's going on.

It was fun and she always liked those moments but she never thought much of it.

Now she wonders what those moments mean and whether Taeyeon goes through the same thing she's going through.

One day, when they decide to escape their stressful city life, she suggests an impromptu trip to the nearest mountain they can find, surprising her best friend. It's going to be their first ever camping trip so Taeyeon has her doubts but Tiffany insists that they'll be fine. She needs to see stars, she says, and although confused, Taeyeon gives in. She can never say no to Tiffany anyway.

As they sit in front of their pre-erected tents at a well-maintained camping ground, she exhales and smiles to herself, satisfied to have found the answer that she's been looking for.

"Taeyeon-ah," she calls out softly to the woman who's focusing all her attention to a pot of boiling water and two packs of instant ramyun.

Her friend hums in reply without taking her eyes away from their dinner.

"Do you like stars?"

Taeyeon turns her head, looks at Tiffany with raised eyebrows, and says, "Err... sure? Why?"

"We can't see them every night, can we?" Tiffany looks up at the bright dots in the dark sky and Taeyeon follows suit, looking up.

"Well, no. Not when we live in a big city." Taeyeon then shifts her attention back to the other woman. "Is there something on your mind?" she asks, unsure of what her best friend is trying to say.
