Bad Luck Taeng. That was what her friends called her ever since she could remember.

Something unfortunate always happened to her at the worst moments in her life. From the small things like ripping her gym shorts during PE exam to bigger, more embarrassing things like tripping and falling face first right at her teacher’s feet when the woman called her to the front of the class.

She also seemed to have a knack for not bringing umbrellas when it suddenly rained buckets or missing her buses or trains, making her late to wherever it was she was heading. Even if she didn’t miss them, the traffic would either be very bad or something would happen to the bus or train that would delay it.

These things happened not once or twice in her adolescence life but quite a few times – definitely much more often than the average person would experience.

It didn’t stop there. Her luck seemed to be at its worst in the love and relationship area.

She had her first crush on a classmate who lived just a few doors away when she was in 6th grade.

The boy moved out of town the day she managed to gather her courage to go to his house with a lollipop in her hands.

In junior high, the boy she liked confided in her that he liked her friend instead and asked her help so he could ask that friend out. It hurt but she did it anyway, helping the two get together.

The second boy she liked used her. He was only friendly towards her so he could cheat off her during exams or borrow her homework to copy. He ended up dating another girl, breaking poor Taeyeon’s heart.

When a boy confessed to her in the first year of high school, she thought that her bad luck had ended but then he cheated on her.

A classmate caught him holding hands with another girl at the mall and told Taeyeon about it.

She confronted him and he didn’t deny it. He smugly stated that he was not a one-woman man and that if Taeyeon couldn’t handle it, he wouldn’t mind replacing her with someone else.

She wanted to slap him so badly that day but ended up just running away in tears.

The classmate that had told her about him cheating tried to console her after that.

“Why do I have such bad luck?” Taeyeon had lamented.

“It’s not you. It’s him. He’s a jerk. Most men are jerks, really. It’s expected. That’s why I’m dating girls now.”
