Grams lowered her glasses down the bridge of her nose as she captures my silhouette in her door. "Do my eyes deceive me" she says sarcastically "my long lost granddaughter returned to me"
"Returned and ready to cuddle" I confirm.
I moved across the room hurriedly, and jumped onto the bed beside her. I wrap my arm around her frail body, and lift my legs onto the bed beside her. I slip off my shoes and pull the cover over us both before turning and resting my cheek on her shoulder. "What a day" I say, letting out a long breath.
Grams pats my head, and adjusts her oxygen line "What's happening in your world honey" she whispers sweetly, placing her lips on my forehead with a quick kiss.
"Well, I'm not sure how to tell you this without raising your blood pressure" I say, peeking up at Grams reaction.
"Ah shit, who came to town" Grams replies. "If its Christopher, you tell him he aint welcome in here" she argues, pushing her glasses back up her nose. She flicks the remote in her hand over and changes the tv channel, to a soap opera that's about to start. "And if it's your Momma" she continues, grunting loudly "tell her there aint a penny for her, and she will leave like a rat jumping a sinking ship"
"It's not my parents....this time" I confess.
I stand and make my way to Grams drawers where I collect fresh clothing to help her change into, a fresh night gown and underwear with thick soft socks. I return to her and help her sit from her lying position, with one hand at her back and her right hand in mine.
"Then who is it" she asks, as I lift her and walk her slowly to her ensuite.
I remove her arm from around my neck and sit her on the chair beside her sink. "Maddie" I practically whisper, while taking off her shirt and placing it in the clothes hamper.
"Oh hell no" Grams replies, as she pushes the faucet and lets the warm water run into the sink.
"Hell to the yes" I reply, taking a cloth and lathering it for her in the steaming water. I let her wash her top half, and find myself with finger flexed, writing on the mirror above her as the steam covers it.
"That better not be curse words" Grams observed.
I finish with a smile. "It's a reminder that I love you" I say, taking the cloth from her hands and wringing it out. I hand her the towel.
"Why is that girl back in town. I thought she went away for college" she asks. "And her Momma moved away didn't she"
"I actually did a little digging on Facebook, and her Mom never left town in the end. Her parents didn't end up separating after all" I reveal, placing the night gown over Grams head, and pulling it down as she pushed her arms through the sleeves.
"Well I wish Gray Hudson would have left that woman...shes been treating him badly since Maddie and Joshua were babies" Grams accuses, pointing at her sprays and lotions. I take the lotion and squeeze some onto my hands before moisturising it into Grams arms. I am extra careful not to break her frail skin.
"Carrie isn't that bad" I reply. I had always found her pleasant when I had stayed with Maddie.
"When you live in a small town long, enough you hear things, and you see them with your own eyes... eventually" she returns "I saw her with a man once, they were making love in a car of all places...at the seven- eleven"
I gasp a little, and stand back stunned. "No way" I say, returning to her arms and applying more lotion.
"Yes way Sarah...It was a Friday night when the kids were all at the football grounds and the Rams had the biggest game of the year. They obviously assumed nobody would see them, they were in the darkest part of the car park round back"
