Chapter 7

The birds were chirping and a lone feather drifted towards the ground. I couldn't tell whether it was a good or bad omen. A sad feather or happy birds?

Either way, last night had been tiring. My eyes felt red and my skin felt stretched. I moved like a zombie to my locker, barely registering anyone around me. Girls huddled in groups and didn't glance my way. Boys eyed the girls before childishly shoving each other. No one noticed me. That was the way I was used to. Then I wouldn't have to explain why I was so tired. Too tired trying to make up my mind on one simple solution. My hand yanked the lock off with aggression but no one noticed.

Sighing, I took my books out when a hush fell over everyone. Cautiously I peered over my shoulder to see if it was Alec and his pack. Instead it was Teya with her hair tied in a ponytail hanging over one shoulder, big shades perched on her head and the biggest pink bubble grew on the edge of her lips. What was she doing here?

"Hey." She greeted, coming my way. I felt everyone stare at me and I was sure my cheeks were bright red. Probably the first time they were actually remembering who I was.

"Hi." I managed to squeak, quickly shutting the locker door and hoping that once classes began, they would stop staring. "Why are you talking to me?" I hissed at her. She had one day of school when she could have easily made friends, disappeared for the past few days and now she's talking to me. I couldn't wrap my head around what on earth she was thinking.

"Because I can." Teya said in a matter of fact voice. Her bubble popped. "He's cute." She nodded to a guy who walked past. At least he hadn't heard Teya. I would have died of mortification.

"Okay..." I sighed. I didn't think she'd have any classes with me so it wasn't likely she was going to bother me. "Argh crikes, I forgot to get a form." I groaned.

"What form?" Teya popped yet another bubble. Was she even allowed to chew bubble-gum?

"Form to join backstage and technical crew." I said tilting my chin up waiting for any kind of judgemental words. She nodded thoughtfully.

"That sounds cool. Let me get a form too." She grinned. Was she going to follow me for the rest of the day? Why had she developed this sudden interest in me?

"Fine." It wasn't going to hurt anyone. However it did have me cringing every step of the way. I wasn't used to walking alongside Teya who was constantly commenting on everyone and anyone. I didn't know whether it was because she was new or if it was just the way she was.

"She looks really bi***y. Is she?" Then I'd have to reply and it usually went along the lines of 'I don't know because I don't talk to her'. Or it was the opposite. "He makes the school uniform look really good." She nudged me sharply in the side. Did she want me to state that I agreed because that was not going to happen?

The walk to the library had never seemed longer. Even though the library was on the other side of the school and we had to go down a flight of stairs. It was like walking with a radio station and the library had never seemed quieter. At first I had been worried that Teya wouldn't keep quiet in the library but it turned out she could whisper a lot.

The library was dusty as always and a few students sat at the round tables studying. No one talked and I was certain they could all hear Teya but no one spoke up. The front desk was directly on our right when we walked in and as usual no one sat at the counter. Sometimes there was someone there, other times you had to knock on the door to where the staff sat chatting with big computer screens demanding their attention.

The black door always remained open but none of the librarians actually saw you standing there. A laminated white sheet was stuck to the door stating 'we are open, please do not hesitate to knock'. Like every other time I hesitated.
