Chapter 30
Teya's POV
Bleeding. I couldn't stop the rivers that flowed down to the underworld. The souls that Anton had shoved through the doors of death; they had become one with the tide. A feeling of crashing guilt hit me like a tsunami. Maybe I should have been able to stop it all. If I hadn't hid in the closet I could have prevented Anton from murdering more of my pack members!
"Teya..." Alec tried his best to give me a soothing warmth but even that couldn't penetrate the deep freeze in my bones.
"Alec... Don't." I shook my head at him. This wasn't what I needed. This valuable time spent on hugging wasn't going to bring anyone back. What I needed to do was get out of here. That was still first on my agenda then rescue Halo before she got hurt. The next step I'd have to worry about later. That was the one that required the most thought.
"Don't you dare even think about going!" Alec growled through his teeth.
"Why not? Are you scared I'm going to get hurt?"
"No! I'm scared you'll never come back like last time. You broke your promise!" Alec hissed in anger. I stared back at him dumbfounded. I was doing this to keep my promise but how had Alec known about my promise?
"You're wrong and what promise?"
"The promise you made when we were kids. You said you'd protect me well leaving me to deal with this isn't protecting me. You're not even going to tell me where you're going or what you're going to do!! Shouldn't I have a right to know?!" Alec yelled. His voice cracked with emotion. The feelings that he had kept hidden from me spilled out of him like gushing lava, burning everything in its path. I hadn't known, that he had been waiting for me. I hadn't thought he remembered me but when I met up with him again, I had pushed him away. I was scared I'd have to leave him and I didn't want to form attachments. All along he had been giving me time and space and I hadn't given him anything in return.
"Okay... I'm sorry." I sat back down on the floor. Even if Halo was my top priority, seeing Alec in this mess. I couldn't turn away from it.
"Maybe I shouldn't have brought you back. It was a mistake. A stupid mistake made by me. If I had known you'd betray me without a second's thought. I'd never have touched you!"
I recoiled in pain at his words. No, betray... That wasn't betraying. I was protecting him but even those weak words disintegrated in front of me as I realised what Alec had seen in his perspective. Even if I had told him the reason why Anton wanted to rule over Starlight pack and then later the other packs, I never told him the reason I had worked for him.
"Alec..." I reached for him. He needed to know, I wasn't betraying him to hurt him. I was acting on my own agenda. This had nothing to do with him.
"Don't touch me." He held up a hand for a second as he steadied his laboured breathing. I nodded and pulled my hand away. I had to tell him everything this time. No good had occurred when I left out small details. Everything had to come out. Nothing to be left in the darkness.
"Alec... I should tell you everything... Don't interrupt me." I paused to shake my head at him when he tried to butt into my sentence. "You need to hear this. That phone call, it wasn't betraying you. It's to save my pack. That body up there..." I pointed at the form that hung outside on the window. "It's one of my pack members. Our alpha may be dead but it's the Beta's job to lead the pack until the next Alpha. It's my responsibility to lead them now that my father's dead."
"I understand that..." Alec said quietly. "It still doesn't explain why?"
"Because I have to!" I burst out, annoyed that Alec still hadn't grasped the concept. "Anton can kill anyone of them at any moment. He can and he will just like that he did to that person. My mum will be next. I know it. This was just the start of his message to tell me to stay out of everything. I can't just sit here and let it all happen. I have to do something about it."
