Chapter 17
I couldn't even think about what happened on my weekend. It was like my brain was shutting down and I was in my room and I wasn't allowed outside. My brain had suffocated from lack of fresh air and I was sure to have over studied.
The sun had been mean so the curtains were all pulled down and I felt like a vampire. I had been miserable and I really shouldn't have been. It had been Alec's fault and now everything was wrong. I couldn't tell my parents, which would just make the situation worse. They would think I was crazy and send me off to see a psychiatrist or something along those lines.
I was so confused about what to think anymore and school only seemed like a small problem until I was walking through the gates. Everything was different now. Big problems suddenly seemed trivial as I was suddenly in a new world, a world I understood for the first time. I didn't realise what Alec had meant until now. It really wasn't safe for me to know about werewolves but it was too late now. Finn was hot on my tail and he knew where I lived. I just had to hope Alec had stationed guards around my house, he would at least do that for me. I hoped.
If only the day could get better, the day did show some amusing possibilities when I handed in all the due homework but it was a brief sense of victory. Immediately after I lapsed into a daydream of where Alec and Teya were. There weren't at school today and there was no way I could even gather enough courage to ask someone from Starlight pack. They kept to their own groups and I wouldn't be able to handle the stares.
I could watch and listen instead for any mention of either name. It was easy since I blended right into the crowd when navigating the hallways and I wasn't noticed. That was one of the perks of being shy.
Even though I was small I was still bumped about and the books my arms were carrying were no more. The loud sound of spreading pages didn't alert passer-by's to my dilemma and only a few people smiled and helped pick up books and then walked off. I huffed to myself as I adjusted the books to balance perfectly in my arms.
"Leave me alone!" the voice startled me and a shoulder roughly hit my back making me pitch forwards. To regain my balance my arms had let go of the books and a sharp pain burst through my spine. The bruises felt like they were on fire all over again. I groaned to myself and couldn't help feeling annoyed at the person who just made my day worse than it already was.
My surprise wasn't registered by anyone as I recognised Ainslie who stalked off in anger and her friends whispering about her having a bad day. No one cared about me and my painful back but then I didn't have to make up lies about why my back was sore in the first place.
Lunch rolled by and I made my way to the restrooms. Loud giggling girls exited and I was glad at least I wouldn't have to listen to their chatter while I did my business. It was awful when they stared then turned to their friends and laughed over something. It was either something nasty about you or something else entirely different and you had no idea which one so you couldn't walk up to them and get in their face or anything.
Sobbing was definitely something different. The sound of rushing water came from one of the taps on the other side of the restroom. I glanced around quickly to see if there was anyone else around. Surprisingly there wasn't. Usually there would be people around for comfort.
I cautiously walked around to catch a view of the person's face. Black streaks of mascara ran down in thin lines and the dirty mirror still allowed to me catch Ainslie's sad face. She turned around quickly, wiping parts of her face with her blue woollen jumper smearing the mascara everywhere.
"That did not help." I muttered.
"I know." Ainslie snapped but I didn't take it to heart. I was shocked she had even heard me in the first place. My parents always noted that I spoke too softly and had a habit of repeating what I said much too loudly for waiters and such other occupations.
