Chapter 35
Teya's POV
Alec cast me a helpless glance, we were out of options. We never even spent enough of our time together. We never accepted this bond between us. Just another one of those problems we'd have to deal with if we survived this. Somehow, that problem was starting to feel extremely welcoming at the moment.
This was the perfect moment for Alec to suddenly claim he had an ace up his sleeve. Unfortunately he was giving me the exact same look. I couldn't believe he was waiting for me to conjure up a miracle. Things didn't work like that. I already gave him an opportunity to free Halo and instead we messed up our chance. Like always.
Although a huge feeling of relief was surging through me, if Halo had been here, she would die alongside us. Maybe with Finn she'd have a better chance of survival if he was still following by the rules which he didn't usually do.
A snap of a twig. They were getting impatient. Why hadn't they attacked yet?
All the wolves had their heads tilted, distracted from us. Something was more important than us. Howling only it wasn't a sound I was familiar with. It was still a fair distance away. Were there more rogues that I wasn't aware of? Hidden in secret underground tunnels beneath the mountain that now belonged to Periwinkle Thorn Pack. It was intriguing how that pack had suddenly migrated to that area. But those questions were for another time. We had other important matters on our paws. Namely the rogues who were running at top speed back into the trees.
"Okay what?" I looked at Alec who gave me an equally dumbfounded look.
"Aren't you the all-knowing wise rogue?"
I glared back at Alec, taking a step away from him showing that I wasn't dependent on him whatsoever. He needed to be clear on one thing. One close call with death didn't mean that I'd run back to him. That did not mean that the argument we had had dissipated. Instead it was going to hang in the air like a storm cloud until our turbulent emotions cleared up.
"One thing I learnt. If they run, we run too." I snapped my jaw and cocked my head to the side instructing him to follow my lead. The rogues were getting a head start, they could arrive back at the main gathering area in Alec's territory. If they take the battle there, we could have two armies of rogues and a pack caught in between. We should herd them in a different direction at least, until we dealt with the new threat. For now we needed to run.
Alec didn't listen. He stayed frozen to the ground as if he had grown long thick roots. I padded back to Alec, my muzzle dangerously close to snapping his face off in one huge bite. It'd leave him scarred for eternity and a sense of guilt and shame would be forever etched in my soul. It could potentially make me feel a little bit better at that particular instant though.
"That's it Alec! You said you'll trust me and look at what you're doing right now. You're purposely ignoring me to teach me a lesson. I don't f**king care right now. Our lives are on the line and all you want is to say 'I hate you, serves you right'? Well I f**king hate you too right now." Veins in my head were ready to burst. Blood was about to be spilled and it wasn't just mine.
I could hear the pounding of more paws against newly erupting dirt. Tiny saplings were being uprooted. I could almost hear their cries and pleas for help. The complete opposite of the stoic Alec in front of me. His apathetic response to the howling that was drawing nearer was turning my bones to water and fire. He was going to be the death of me. I was sure of it.
"Move your lazy arse!" I growled through the mind link. Still no response even as I shoved at his furry wolf body. His claws were dug into the ground so deep, he could have been an earthy iceberg. He didn't budge even as I rammed into him, head first. The only dent I made was on my forehead.
