Chapter 1

“Oww.” I hissed through my teeth, touching the edges of the wound on my knee. I stared at a slow trickle of red blood that flowed down my leg. The water hit my knee and I watched the blood follow the line of water turning it pink and cleaning the skin. The wound wasn’t that bad, it just needed some bandages and disinfectants.

“Halo!” The trees rustled around me and I quickly got up from the rocky ground. Brown patches of dirt stained my clothes. There was no way I was going to fool mum and dad. My reflection in the running stream was a mess. My hair was tangled or as much as my short hair could get tangled. My clothes were torn and my shoes caked in mud. That was what happened after you went for a jog through the forest after deep rainfall.

“Halo!” This time the trees parted, scattering leaves to the ground. I winced as Alec stumbled through the trees, his face covered with worry. “Are you hurt?” He grabbed my shoulders and shook me roughly.

“No, uh. Sort of.” I smiled sheepishly.

“What were you thinking?” Alec scolded me.

“Well it went like this. I went walking and tripped and tumbled down the exact same slope you just ran down.” I said smiling while leaving out how I had actually been running, trying to build up my stamina. For years I could never match up to Alec’s strength and speed. For starter’s that was because he was a werewolf and I wasn’t. He had super heightened senses and I was all human. How we were friends was a miracle. Werewolves didn’t tend to associate with humans and even if they did, they wouldn’t ever let out their secrets unless you were their mate. I wasn’t his mate however but a different exception.

“You’re so clumsy Halo. Now hurry up, you’re parents are worried.” Alec said.

“I know, I know and I’m perfectly fine.” I said but followed him all the same out of the forest. He had a much better sense of direction as he spent so much time in the forest. “Also, I was thinking about how I spend so much time around you, but not other werewolves.”

“I’ve already told you heaps of times. Humans don’t meddle with werewolves unless their mates. It’s dangerous.” Alec pushed aside a branch tiredly. We’ve had this argument so many times.

“But it gets so annoying that I don’t get to make friends with werewolves.” I complained. “So that’s why I’ve thought of becoming your pack doctor.” I grinned.

“Nope.” Alec said without hesitation.

“Why not?”

“Because you need training.” Alec grabbed my hand and pulled me up the rest of the steep slope. My feet were sinking into the sloppy mud. They made a weird suctioning noise as I pulled my feet back out.

“I can get training and plus you would get an extra helper aiding the wounded during battle.”

“You make it sound like such an amazing job. It isn’t.” Alec guided me through the border of his pack making sure the border patrol wouldn’t see me. My home came up ahead surrounded by tall trees. The door opened automatically with my mum and dad both glaring at me and my knee.

“How many times have I told you not to go out into the woods? And still you insist and then hurt yourself.” My mum pulled me into a quick hug before poking knee. Tingles of pain ran up my leg and I winced.

“I’m pretty sure poking it won’t make it feel better.” I huffed and quickly walked inside before Alec could comment on how the story unfolded in his opinion meaning how I disobeyed every single rule ever made which, was not true. I asked my parents if I could go out and they said yes but Alec was supposed to babysit me, as my parents put it.
