Chapter 14

The little girl's feet flew through the dirt. Each footstep felt longer and heavier than it should have been. She should have been a light stone carefully whizzing through the trees with wings boosting her as she went. Instead, every moment made her throat burn and her chest heave. She didn't know what she was going to find.

Bushes snapped at her heels and tree branches whipped her face until her cheeks were stinging and tears were flowing down in a steady trickle. Suddenly everything was going wrong. It had all been perfect, her birthday and their pack.

The Blue Dawn pack were all celebrating and the big party had started in the morning. She had dressed up and everyone had come to the pack house to celebrate. Being the Beta's daughter meant she did have some extra privileges and since their pack was so close to Starlight pack, they had come over for a visit. She had watched from the window, everyone had said that the son of the Alpha was around her age and she was curious. She had never seen him before. The cars had rolled up the driveway and the pink balloons swayed in the breeze.

Then they popped. Every single one of those pink balloons popped and she had screamed. Rogues burst out of the cars and wolves came from every direction. There had been screaming, crying and red flashing lights. Everything had been a blur and the rest was a haze of getting out of the house. Crashing glass. Her shoes lost forever and now it was just a repeat.

Only this time she was heading back to the house.

The shock hit her the moment she saw the upturned cars with flames licking the windows. She didn't need to use her heightened senses to smell the dead bodies or the blood that stained everything.

This all caused her to run faster, to put more effort into every stride. She hoped she would make it in time but everywhere she looked, she saw damage and destruction. All the windows were broken and shattered. The smell of smoke unfurled around her as it curled out of the windows and escaped into the air.

The glass crackled under her bare feet and she didn't notice the pain as she saw the bodies of the fellow warriors of her pack lying on the ground. The bodies all in different positions but all the same outcomes. Puddles of blood lay around them and covered the base of the girl's feet now.

Why would the rogues do this? How could they commit to such horror? She let go of a bloodcurdling scream and wished if only she could shift then she would make every single rogue pay for their misdoings.

The girl had to run out of the house to receive lungful's of fresh air. She didn't want to see any more deaths. She wanted it all to stop.

As if answering her calls, dozens of wolves poured out from the trees, all growling and baring their teeth. They were not part of her pack. She backed away cautiously, wondering if it was the nearby pack who were attacked as well. Starlight pack.

The wolves circled around her, all ten times bigger and stronger. She wasn't going to survive this unless some miracle appeared. The biggest one with grey fur and a scar that stretched across his face stepped forward. His greasy coat was like dull silver and his hard eyes looked like they survived many tough battles. The same eyes scrutinised her for what felt like eternity.

The back of the girl's neck was heating up and her feet weren't moving. She couldn't move any part of her body. She was frozen to the ground and the only thing her mind was processing was, this wolf was big and all she wanted to do was get down on the ground and beg for her life. Her knees shook at the idea, pleased, at least then her legs wouldn't have to support her.

The girl's strength and pride didn't permit that. She couldn't fall, not if it gave that wolf an opportunity to strike at her. She was the Beta's daughter. She was stronger than that.
