Chapter 33

Last time I had checked. The cell that I had been imprisoned in for the last few days had the most unpleasant smell ever and contained a sleeping female on the bed. I wondered if anything had changed in the few moments it had taken for the stretcher I lay on to exit the room.

Maybe the air stank less of blood and more of sweat. Maybe it'd finally dry after all the clumsy moments of me dripping water from the plastic cups. There was even the slightest possibility of Lola waking up. I just hoped she would be okay. Now she would be lonely by herself in that tiny cell.

"Finn..." I asked, the croaking noise that came from my throat made me wince once again. I missed my soft voice, now it sounded as if I had a cardboard rock scrape my throat over and over again.

There was something I wanted to confirm with him. A question that had been bugging me since the moment he had picked up the stretcher. He had changed. I had felt it in the way the other fellow rogue holding the other end of the stretcher was relaxed and I wondered what had happened.

Something was off. No sooner had I thought that had a giant billowy screen of smoke entered the hallway. Shades of grey filled my face quickly and soon I could see anything. I was relying on my hearing once again. The finishing sound of the hiss of a canister softly faded. Soon it was filling my nose and mouth and all I could taste was dust. I coughed at the thought of flecks of dirt enter my lungs. It tickled the soft linings of my mouth until I coughed and gagged on the foul substance. What was going on?

"Hold that question for a second Halo." I heard Finn cough a weak response before the stretcher surged forward through the wall of smoke. I was left confused yet again as we charged through smoke after smoke after smoke. I had no clue where we were heading and I was concerned that the werewolf in front of me couldn't see where he was going and would trip but that didn't happen. Not even after every sharp turn. It was to be expected after all considering their werewolf abilities.

It only took what felt like a second to me to escape the thick fog and when we did, I didn't expect what I saw in front of me. My brain denied what I was seeing. I was scared that the moment I blinked, the image would shatter and fade away so I cast my glances elsewhere, and hoping it all wasn't an illusion. I wasn't ready to face the lights just yet.

Trees, so many trees that the earth smelled like pine and the scent washed over me. Relief filled me and calmness. I was out of the cell. Blue sky and white clouds, the tree tops all in my view. My stretcher was soon laid down on the ground giving me a better view of my surroundings.

Truth. That was what Finn was showing me right now and how correct he was.

"Halo!" Teya's voice rang loud and clear through the small clearing we were in. The slight wind brushed through the grass next to me until I could see her running shoes come closer. Booots the colour of green and brown. "What did he do to you?" Her voice rose a few octaves and if I were the target of her anger I would have run as far away as possible.

"Stuff..." I said softly, there was no way I could tell her about the punching or kicking. I didn't want to worry her or increase he stress levels. Seeing the aftermath was bad enough. If she knew what really happened, who knew how she would act.

"This is your fault isn't it!?" Teya stopped her fingers from touching me face, too worried if it would hurt me. I heard a faint rustling noise but still could only see the sky. If I craned me neck hard enough, I'd risk spraining a muscle but it'd allow me a view. The thought of pain again prevented me from moving. Once again I had to rely on sound only.

"Don't jump to conclusions so easily." Finn's laugh sounded different this time like he was controlling what he wanted Teya and Alec to think.

If I could smile I would have but I couldn't feel any movement in my face and I just hoped my eyes portrayed the right emotion to Alec. He had run to my side the moment Teya had left. A frown was twisted into his features and anger flashed deep in his eyes. He would never get over the fact that I had once again disobeyed his instructions.
