Chapter 12
Another black cross over another name. The weekend had rolled over and the smell of baking filled the kitchen and the rest of the house. Cookies and cakes were my mum's specialty but today my mind wasn't on food. Teya hadn't been at school and then Finn came into my room in terrible condition. Something was up. If what Finn had said was correct then Teya was kidnapped.
I didn't believe Teya had evil purposes in mind and even if she was a rogue, she was a friendly one. So far I had made a list of people who might have kidnapped Teya and I had a feeling it was a werewolf. First off Teya would be able to handle any human so it had to be a werewolf.
Only problem, I didn't know any werewolves. The only one I really knew was Alec. Ainslie wouldn't want me to bother her and if I sought out Logan, Alec would be with him. Alec wouldn't be happy if I turned up at his doorstep but this was Teya who could be in serious trouble. This was a life and death situation. Alec could provide an exception just this once.
I hurriedly put on a coat and dashed downstairs to where my mum stood alone in the kitchen. My dad worked on Saturdays and I wondered briefly if my mum would even drive me to Alec's house.
"Mum?"
"Yes what Halo?" My mum looked up from her chopping.
"Could I go visit Alec today?" The silence was stifling and I wondered what had happened to my mum.
"Why? I thought you and Alec had a brotherly and sisterly relationship." My mu looked up, her knife was held in mid-air. My jaw dropped. How could my mum possibly think that? Why didn't she believe me the first time I said I didn't think of Alec that way?
"Mum!" I gasped. My mum shrugged and then went back to chopping the cucumbers. "So are you going to drive me?"
"Fine, since you need to be up and active anyway." My mum sighed and cleaned the knife. "We'll being some cookies over." I waited impatiently for my mum to stow her apron away and for her fingers to tie her laces. I picked up the tray covered in a tea towel with impatience and my mum let out a huff.
"Really, why are you so excited?" My mum stood up and let me take the tray of cookies. I couldn't explain to her that Teya was in trouble. Then I'd have to explain about werewolves and that would break my promise between Alec and I never broke promises.
"I'm not. You're just slow." I said and my mum rolled her eyes. I couldn't help it, what if something terrible was happening to Teya right that instant. Then I'd feel awful that if only my mum had hurried a little faster I could have gotten there in time. I buckled up three times faster than mum and tried to stop my feet from tapping. I got the jitters whenever I was nervous and tended to fiddle much to my mum's dislike.
I could feel her glare on my legs that wouldn't stop shaking. I forced them to still and paid attention to the road. Why were there so many red lights? I groaned as we finally got onto the main road and more trees started to surround both sides of the lanes. They grew taller and taller with fatter brown trunks and healthy branches of leaves. It was such a dense cluster that I couldn't see 10 metres into the forest without it blurring into more trunks. Birds whistled overhead flying faster than the car.
If only I could fly? It would be much faster since the werewolf packs lived further away from humans. They wanted to live in their own secluded area where they didn't have to worry about people seeing them shift. They massive acres land with a lake in the middle that stretched for a few kilometres. Two mountains peered down in the distance and we had to weave along the twisted roads to get up near the top. I could see the valley and out little down far out in the distance and the drive only took half an hour.
