Chapter 29

The woman moaned softly as she woke up. Her eyes flickered around softly, to the door of the cell and then to me.

"So it wasn't a dream." The woman rubbed her head as if she had a headache. Judging from her condition, maybe did. She had slept straight through lunch and now dinner had arrived. Luckily this time the water in the cup hadn't split over only they were cruel enough to give us one cup only. I had already drank the lunch water. This should be for Teya's mum.

"Are you okay?" I asked and went to pick up the tray for her. Her hand looked much better now that it had a chance to heal. With her werewolf speed healing, it'd be fine in no time. "Here's dinner. I've already eaten my share." I said sheepishly. To be perfectly honest, I had been starving. Their rations had been small which was understandable in their case as they had so many mouths to feed.

"I'm fine now... I was just a little sleepy. I haven't had proper sleep in a long time but now that I've fully rested up I want to know what's happening outside." Her eyes widened and the bags that had been prominent before were less obvious. She sat up straight and with more enthusiasm and energy.

"There's a war about to start between Starlight pack and the rogues." I explained.

"You know about werewolves?" Teya's mum exclaimed in surprise but then shook her head as if the thought was clear as day. "Of course you would know if you were here." Teya's mum muttered to herself, I didn't know whether she wanted me to reply to that or not so I smiled in return. It was the easiest thing to do.

"I guess the rogues want to use me as a hostage against Alec, he's the alpha of Starlight pack although it's pointless if you ask me." I sighed in defeat and leaned against the wall.

"I know this may seem abrupt but I couldn't help wondering if you knew my daughter? Her name is Teya?" The woman looked at me so intently I had to nod straight away. I felt compelled to answer, I didn't want to disappoint her not when she felt so strongly about Teya. "Is she alright?"

"Yes." I stuttered, Teya's mum had her hands on my shoulders and I couldn't break her grip off of me.

"Oh thank the goddess..." Teya's mum finally relaxed and I was glad that her nails had decided to stop digging themselves into my shoulders. She settled herself back onto the bed and dug into the food, pleased with my answer.

"What are we going to do?" I asked Teya's mum. I felt utterly useless in here and if anything, maybe she had some advice for us. We had to get out of here.

"There's nothing to do."

"What do you mean?"

"We can't escape from here." Teya's mum already guessed me train of thought. "The rogues will sense us before we can escape. They'll catch us easily." She shook her head at the idea like escape had been tried so many times before and each one must have ended in failure. Her whole being trembled in surrender. Lost hope.

"That's not true. There's always a way..." I argued but she just gave me a tired sigh. The argument was over with that one resigned look. There was no more information that she was going to give me.

Teya's mum let the tray slide back to the ground and gave a tired yawn. Her body was still terribly thin but her face held more colour than this morning. More rest would do her good.

"I guess we'll call it a night." I said and lifted the other half of the blanket up. The bed would have to be shared.

"One last thing." Teya's mum paused while she readjusted the sheets so we could both fit in. "What's your name?"
