Chapter 34

Teya's POV

There were many things I have regretted in my life. I've tried my best to stop letting them get to me and move on, but this... This was different. Regret was still fresh in my mind. It burned itself deep into my flesh making sure I would never forget.

This time I wouldn't forget.

My back legs pushed me off into the air, the trees on both sides of me blurred as I concentrated. Fur sprouted all over my body and my hands turned into paws. A tail grew and my mouth morphed into a snout. Soon I was running through the forest on four legs.

I was glad for the rushing wind in my face. It pushed back the fur and the tears out of my eyes. Running while being blinded wasn't the safest idea during the heat of the battle.

I had to catch up to Alec. Out of all the times we had to have an argument. Just when I thought we were getting along. There. I spotted a flicker of a brown tail. I veered off to the left where the sounds of howling became louder. I could hear the frantic whispers of telepathy. Everyone was screaming at once. I winced slightly my left should scraped against a tree, bark flipping off into the air. I had to control this telepathy before I was driven insane. Almost like turning down the volume on the radio, I blocked out everything and focused on my paws digging into the soft brown dirt. Each thump matched the pace of my heart and helped me focus on catching up to Alec.

My eyes snapped to the right as an oncoming pair of wolves raced up to meet Alec. Both of them were growling ferociously, teeth razor sharp and glinted in the pockets of sunlight. We were really close to the battle now. I barked out a warning for Alec but he didn't need it. He had already slammed all four of his paws into the ground. Dirt sprayed out in a shower for the insects living in front of him. The two rogue wolves growled as they landed in the spot Alec would have been if he hadn't immediately stopped.

Without hesitating Alec had pounced on the wolf on the left taking him by surprise. Alec's teeth snapped in the air as the wolf shoved him to one side. I had to get there but the thick trunks of trees were blocking my way and I couldn't run in a straight line. Swerving to avoid nature was costing me precious time.

I only saw snippets of the fight and I shouldn't have been surprised at the outcome. Alec had let the two wolves circle around him before he attacked the one closest. His jaws clenched around an ankle, bringing the rogue to the ground. The other pounced on Alec but he effortlessly rolled away. Alec returned the attack by tackling the furry rogue to the ground. Personally I would have done it differently but I wasn't really in the position to say much. I just hoped Alec didn't get himself hurt.

Alec growled and easily gained the upper hand while ducking to avoid the onslaught from the jaws of the other rogue. He was handling both of them so easily. I almost ran backwards as a lifeless rogue body slammed into a tree in front of me. I quickly sniffed the air, he wasn't from my pack. Immediately I burst into the clearing. The other rogue dead with his neck snapped in half and Alec was standing in the middle, his jaw covered in blood. His wolf was magnificent. Deep brown shaggy fur and hazel eyes. I could feel my body being pulled closer to him.

Alec stopped to glare at me once he realised I was with him in the small area where there were no trees. I felt my lower jaw drop, ready to say something when I realised I was still in wolf form. The temptation to shift back was strong until I remembered that I didn't know where Starlight pack hid their stashes of clothes.

"What do I do...?" I tried to focus on mind linking Alec but my mind kept wandering all over the place. Halo, Alec and my pack. I had too many obligations to too many things.

Pack before personal affairs. I had a duty towards my pack. This was what it was all about, the regret. Friend or pack but if I ran through all the possible scenarios. Carrying Halo back through the battle of rogue and pack, she wouldn't have survived. Leaving her with Finn was the only other option even if it might not have been the safest. What was I thinking?! Finn was going to hurt her and I left her with him because of my pack. Suddenly I was starting to see things from Alec's point of view even when I knew they were downright wrong.

Growls disrupted everything, the peace and quiet of the small area erupted into a burst of chaos. Birds took to the skies and furry animals scuttle out of trees that shook dangerously from clumsy wolves. It even started to sound as if the ground was shaking beneath our feet. Were all the rogues coming our way?

"What's that?" Alec gave me a look of surprise before sending me a message through the mind link. That was a second before a lot of wolves decided to burst through the trees. A lot just suddenly grew in numbers and they were all rogues. Rogues who weren't part of my pack either. Where did they all come from? All previous arguments were forgotten between Alec and me as we stood side by side. The thought of survival drew us together. At any other time I would have shivered and moved away from the contact between our shoulders. But this wasn't like any other time. This time there was a pack of rogues gathered in front of us with snapping teeth and saliva drooling from their mouths. I wouldn't have even suspected they were rogues from the way they moved, in unity as a pack. This scared me, to think Anton could manage to order around rogues who worked together as a pack. How was it even possible?

No, that wasn't the right thought. We had something even bigger on our hands. Our life.

I started counting the first row of wolves. More than ten. Behind them, another ten and beyond that I had lost count. This was definitely not going to plan. I should have known, after everything this morning, calling Finn, telling him about sparing his life in the war if you brought Halo out. Of course things played out rather smoothly, Finn disposed of Anton, the leader of rogues and without him in command, it made our lives much easier. Of course what we hadn't anticipated was that Anton would still have such a large army at his disposal or Halo in such a beat up state that she couldn't move. A furious fire burned in my stomach thinking of when Halo had been in the clearing before. She had looked awful. Purple coloured her face and her eyes were barely showing from the amount of swelling. Her lips were badly cut and her voice was so inaudible, it hurt me just thinking that we hadn't been able to rescue her soon enough.

Now I was thinking along the same terms as Alec again.

"We're going to lose." Alec muttered telepathically.

"No sh*t. Where's the rest of your pack?"

"They're dispersed around the mountain. No one's close enough to get here in time."

"Well that's great." Sarcasm in telepathy was just as edgy as if I had voiced my thoughts out loud and I was glad. Life would really suck without sarcasm, especially in these situations.

Now what were we supposed to do. We couldn't perform the back-up plan if we died. Why wasn't there a back-up plan if we couldn't do the back-up plan straight away? I couldn't believe we were so underprepared.

I didn't realise it but suddenly our backs were pressed up against a large tree trunk. During my inner thoughts, the rogues had been gaining ground. They were fully surrounding us now. Everything that I had worked up to till now was about to be smothered in a battle between jaws and teeth. My promise, my duty and my mum. I was trying hard to protect those things but it was looking as if it might not be possible anymore. If I die here then all those three things are torn down with me. This wasn't how anything was supposed to go but when does anything ever go my way.
