Escaping you
3 weeks later
"Yeah I understand." The lady on the phone is explaining I have to go to court, which was expected with the adoption, I just didn't expect it to be 2 weeks before school starts.
"Yes ma'm I'll be there." She hangs up the phone and I go upstairs, lightly shaking Atlas awake.
She opens her eyes and I smile down at her
"Hey baby." I say and she grins, pulling me down beside her.
"We have court at 4." I whisper and she nods, pushing her head further into her pillow.
"I'll just wake you up later." I smile and she doesn't respond, leading me to believe she's probably already back asleep.
I go down to the kitchen, Athena comes tumbling her little self down the stairs a few minutes later, rubbing her eyes.
"Hey pretty girl." I say and she walks over to me
"Hi." She says tiredly and I chuckle, lifting her off the ground and onto the counter
I make her something to eat while she observes me, occasionally speaking up about something I'm doing or asking to get down.
"Go eat baby." I tell her and she runs off with her food when it's done and I go back upstairs to wake Atlas up again.

"I'm kinda nervous." I say to Atlas who's trying to fix my hair
"It'll be fine love" she says and I nod, letting her finish whatever she's doing.
"When do we have to put her in school?" She asks
"She starts when we start, and I haven't talked to you about this but I guess now is a best a time as ever"
She raises an eyebrow in confusion
"I'm not gonna stay on campus because it's not required until sophomore year, and she starts school earlier in the morning than we do so I can take her, your mom said she'd pick her up." I say and she nods
"If you aren't staying on campus Im definitely not either."
"You don't have to do that, if you want to stay on campus you can."
"I don't." She says and I nod
"We can talk more about it later, Are you ready?" I ask her and she smiles
"Mhm, I'll go get Athena."
I grab my keys from beside me on the table and meet Atlas and Athena downstairs.
When we get to the courthouse I go around the side of the door and open Atlas's door for her before going to the backseat and getting Athena out of her car seat as well as grabbing all the legal documents from beside her.
When we get inside the office lady, a different one from the other day, asks for name and birthdate and such before leading us to the main courtroom.
It was a long complicated process in which Athena fell asleep and I had to recall some of the most horrifying moments of my life and hers, but the judges final words made it all so worth it.
"Okay, Mr Sinclaire and Ms. White, she's all yours. You'll have to come back for some paperwork later, but as of now, it's official."
I breathe out in relief and squeeze Atlas's hand, Picking up a sleeping Athena, and finally exiting the courthouse.
Athena wakes up whenever I put her in the car, smiling up at me.
"Do you want to get something to eat?" I ask Atlas and she nods.
