Evelyn's POV

Ruminate

(Verb)

To think deeply about something

Being Dimitri's assistant isn't as awkward as I thought it'd be. I get my own little space, I don't have to make conversation, I don't have to look at Kim, it's great! The only thing I miss is Martin and Raeni.

Raeni actually started dating that girl she was dancing with in the club when I went to get some water. They're cute together and I hope they make each other happy. The puppy love stage of dating can be harsh.

"Hello?" I answer the ringing phone.

"This is Eriks Popov."

"How're you Mr. Popov? How can I help you?"

"Tell Dimitri Ricci to meet me for lunch. He will know where." The phone rings in silence as he ends the call.

What the hell? Fucking rude! I was using my best customer service voice and everything!

I knock on Dimitri's door and wait for him to allow me to enter.

"Eriks Popov called my desk and told me to inform you to meet him for lunch. He didn't mention where, but he said you'd know."

Dimitri's face grows pale as his knee begins to bounce under his desk. The atmosphere in the room hardens. Why is he reacting like this?

"Call Antonio and tell him to come to the office with some men." He says as he returns to his paperwork.

Like a banana, I split. He seemed angry, his jaw clenched against his teeth, and he wouldn't look at me. I hope Antonio can tell me what's going on, I don't think asking Dimitri is the best idea right now.

I flip through my call book and find Antonio's number.

"Ciao?"

{Hello?}

"Hey, Antonio? This is Evelyn. Dimitri told me to call you to bring yourself and some men to his office. Um, a man named Eriks Popov called."

"Merda," he whispers, "alright thank you Evelyn."

{Shit,}

"Wait, who is Eriks?" I press.

A deep sigh fumbles through the line. "A Russian."

Oh, I don't know why that didn't click. His name is Russian as hell, and we are supposed to hate them.

"Oh, is this a bad sign?" I ask.

"Not necessarily. It depends, he could be trying to ambush us, or he could be wanting to discuss something regarding territory." Antonio says the last part with hope.

My stomach curls in fear. What if it is an ambush? What if a ton of people die?

"I'm coming." I state. Do I really want to go, no. But I need to at least try to keep the peace, right?

"I don't think the Don would like that."

I roll my eyes. I know Dimitri would throw a fit if I even asked to come. He's like a toddler sometimes.

"I'll work it out." I tell him before I end the call.

A cold sweat breaks on my forehead. In this moment I try to think about what my mom would tell me to do but, she'd be upset and call me an idiot for joining the mafia. She would be so upset with me right now. It all happened so fast! This isn't what she wanted for me; this isn't how my life was supposed to go.
