How true is your true self?
Risa's summary: Makiko's the target. Makiko's a pawn.
Makiko's trying to find herself.Sixteen years old Makiko has her plate full. Dealing with suppressed emotions and the absence of a parent is never easy, and Makiko's trying to do just those when she finds herself in a pool of deep dark.
There are eyes on her. There are boys. There are runaways. There are demons who kill runaways. And there's a demon who likes Makiko.Quiet is such a smooth read! It's one of those books that carry you with such ease that makes it almost impossible let go. The ease.
I fell in love with the diversity I found therein, and wished I could enjoy more of what its diverse characters had to offer.
However, I had certain issues with this book. First off, I found Makiko's character quite disquieting — not in a good way. This is just my opinion, a lot of persons could read this book and completely fall in love with her character.
I'm not exactly sure if I should chalk this feeling up to Makiko being so crazy about boys. To good extent, I get them: her situation and probably that phase. But there were times when I really wanted to feel something for her but of course, all roads led back to boys. Maybe this craze feeds the plot, in that case, it'd be necessary, just not in ways that could throw one off.
Another possible reason: I felt like emotional chunks of her life were simply thrown in in ways that reduced their significance. Her father's death, for instance, his 'resurrection', her sheltered life... Etcetera.
Story talk is one underestimated spice! Good dialogue between characters can stir a lot of emotions, build conflict, and even develop your characters and plot. That said, dialogue between characters also didn't sit right with me. I found it flat and quite unrealistic in certain areas.
I adored the author's description dexterity, lucid and engaging. Grammar was also tremendously impressive; errors were sparse.
I loved the book's cover, it tied in just right with the genre. The book's summary I found very confusing though; I really couldn't deduce what the main idea of the story was.
Quiet is a smooth, thrilling, and engaging read. I'd recommend this to anyone who'd enjoy a neatly written thriller with diverse characters and personalities.
