Helping Michael get ready for day camp, I couldn't help but wonder what was going on at work. I was totally going to get that promotion; I had worked so hard at it there was no way I couldn't! Another part of me thought about the effect the possible promotion would have. It probably meant more hours, and I already spent too much time away from Michael. If it were my choice, I would stay home and raise him without the help of day camp, but I needed money. "You ready?" I asked. Once again, he was sitting on his bed reading a comic. Michael and his comics went together like peanut butter and jelly. "Come on Mikey Mike, it's time to go." Michael looked up from his comic book and hopped eagerly over to me. "Okay." He smiled, his bright eyes shining.
"Have a good day today!" I shouted as he skipped away from the car. He was growing up too fast, next year he was starting preschool...Off to work it was with me. The anxiety building inside of me, I practically sped to work.
I shyly knocked on Margo's door, exhaling and closing my eyes for a moment to calm down. What if I had done something? What if I was actually being fired? "Come on in!" A female voice said. I thought about all the things I had done recently, and when none of them seemed bad or unloyal, I bravely entered her office. "Hey." I said calmly. "Hello!" Margo retaliated. She seemed cheery enough, which lowered my anxiety a considerable amount. "Lillian said you wanted to talk to me. Is everything okay?" I said, nervously digging my nails into the palm of my hand and biting my lip. "Yes, I was just wondering if you have done any work with rock or uhm, like, metal lyrics. We have a new client, a band actually, that needs help. They are actually fairly popular in the rock community, so it's a big deal." She said. I shrugged, I could work with just about any genre. "Yeah, I've done several actually. I can help." Her face lit up. "Great! I have their contract right here, you can read it and sign it if it all sounds good. And..." A childish expression took over her. "And?" I said, curious. "I'm raising your pay by twenty and upping your rank. Guess you could say promotion."
Promotion!
"Thank you! I don't know what to say--I'll definitely put my all in this case." I said. An extra 20 an hour would definitely help Michael and I. Thank God! I was going to put my full effort into this one. She handed me a check and a fancy document.
Black Veil Brides -- Lyrical Contract
By signing this document, I agree to help Black Veil Brides
with all lyrical content of their music until 10/28/14. Blah blah blah blah blah...I had seen these contracts a million times, and decided to just sign it. "When's my first meeting with them?" I asked. "Let me check," Margo said, pulling out a big calendar book. "Wednesday of this week, you have four days off to get ready." I nodded, pulling out my phone and going to my alarm app. "Can you give me an address and a time?" Margo pulled out another large book. "5555 Cemetery Drive, 2:30." My fingers carefully pressed the time and address and clicked enter. "Okay! Thank you so much, Margo. I'll be there." I said. Margi gave me a warm smile. "Alright. Good luck, Tessa!"
Wow. A promotion. Wow. A lyrical contract with a popular band. As I drove home, I could barely breath. Four days off to spend with Michael, and extra $20, maybe my life isn't going so terribly wrong. I bet Andy is just sitting at home, or in some god for saken club, wasting away right now and look where I am.
But God, was I wrong.
