Tris and Raven have been in captivity for 13 years before Raven managed to escape. Everyday, using a chunk of metal found in her cell, Raven managed to bang the bars of her cell wide enough so that she could slide through. The bureau had Tris placed right across from Raven for torture. They figured it would kill her to never be able to hold onto her daughters hand. Tris told Raven about her life and most importantly, Raven's father. She told her about the factions, her (Raven's) uncle Caleb, her grandparents, and of course..... The divergents. When Raven had escaped there was no way of bringing Tris along, so she was told to find Tobias and tell him Tris is alive and well.
