Loss

I was home alone, Liam and Alex were instructing a class while the twins were at the park with Larissa.

I moved and felt a rush of liquid flow from me followed by intense cramping.

I saw Melinda walking down the street, she looked sick and pale.  I started walking over, she fell, and my walk turned into a run.  I turned her over and saw the blood on her jeans.  I scooped her up and carried her to doc.

Liam made his way within ten minutes.  I was leaning against the wall outside waiting when doc came out.  I turned to him.  Liam looked up from where he sat.  "Early miscarriage.  She said she was only a week or so late from her period.  It was just a lot of blood, plus she said she wasn't feeling well to start."

"We didn't know she was..."  I said.

"Neither did she.  She just thought it was a late period.  Rest, fluids, and no sex for 6 weeks."  He said.

Melinda walked out with doc's help about 10 minutes later.  I scooped her up.  "I'll get the kids and meet you back home."  Liam said.  I nodded.

Back home, Melinda was quiet.  I was sitting beside her, Liam leaning on the counter.  The kids were napping in the cribs.  "Mel."  I said.

"It was Liam's."  She said her voice hoarse with unshed tears.  She cleared her throat and sat there chewing on her lip.  "I didn't know I was, but I know who's it was."  She said quietly.

"Mels, it's fine.  We aren't mad."  Liam said.

"I think what sucks the most is while survivers are supposed to repopulate fucking Armageddon, we have to do it without proper medical care, limited medical resources, and with a ton of zombies on the other side of the damn walls."  Melinda said.  "And we have to constantly worry about a breach in the wall and about a zombie coming in an eating the children."  She said before walking out of the house.

After my loss, the kids and I lived separate from Liam and Alex.  I was teaching the kids math, science, reading and other basic need to know subjects.

Liam and Alex were giving me as much space as I wanted.  Rachel and Riley were a year old now.  It's been six months since my loss and I'd be lying if I said I didn't want Liam and Alex.

Carly was officially with the Captain and I was one of the main leaders below the captain and Carly.

I was at the weaponry and storage building taking inventory.  I kept eying the scissors on the table.  "Hm."  I said.

"Mama?"  Rachel said hearing me.

"Mama's just thinking."  I said crouching in front of her.  "Mama needs a haircut."  I said.  I handed her a bowl of berries and she sat down and started eating them.  She watched me start cutting my hair.

"Let's go find mama and sis okay?"  I said to Riley.  He tried running ahead of me, I picked him up and hung him upside down tickling him.  He laughed.  Liam was on the perimeter wall for his shift.

I opened the door to the weaponry and saw Melinda had cut her hair and Rachel was brushing it, both of them giggling.  "Wow."  I said.  Melinda looked at me.

"What?  Does it look bad?"  She asked.

"No.  It looks great."  I said.

That night, everyone gathered for dinner.  Rachel and Riley were sitting with the other kids.  Liam walked over after his shift on the wall and stopped seeing me.  "What?"  I asked.

"Nothing."  He said.  "You look..."  He said.  "Great."  He said.

"Really?  You and Alex keep starring at me like I'm an alien."  I said.

"That's just because you look hot and they want in your pants."  Carly said.  I hit her arm and caught Alex and Liam exchanging a look.  A look I knew well.  Carly was right.

After dinner, I gave the kids a bath and put them in bed.  I was sitting on the couch in front of the window running my fingers through my wet hair after brushing it.

A knock got my attention, I stood up and went to get the door.  It was either Alex or Liam, no one else usually came by.  I was wearing a camisole and a pair of sleeping shorts.  I unlocked the door and opened it.  It was Alex and Liam.  "You two lost?"  I asked teasing them.  Liam smirked.
