Betrayed

We were missing two handguns and two rifles.  I walked over to the wall with my clipboard.  Liam looked down and Alex looked over at me.  "Hey, ready for more already?"  He asked with a smile.

"You wish."  I said.

"What's up?"  He asked.  I smiled at Liam and he smiled back.  We walked toward the house, Alex slid his arm around my shoulders.

"We are missing weapons."  I said.  "Who else has a key?"  I asked.

"You're the key master."  He said.

"Carly, can you watch Riley and Rachel?"  I asked.

"Sure."  She said.

"You mean to tell me, the key place you are in charge of is missing weapons."  The captain said.  I was standing in front of his desk, my arms crossed.

"Yes sir."  Alex was leaning against the wall behind me.  "I've checked over and over and I don't know who signed them out."  I said.

"Well, you understand you are a suspect."  He said.

"Yes sir."  I said.

"You know what I have to do."  He said.  I swallowed hard.

"Yes sir."  I said.

"Jack."  He said and Jack came in.  "I'm sorry Melinda."  I nodded.

"Captain, she has two kids who need her."  Alex said.

"I know.  Alex, you and Liam investigate and if you're fast enough your wife won't be in holding for more than a day."  Jack held out his hand.  I gave him my wrists and he cuffed my hands in front of me.  A tear fell and Jack escorted me out of the building.

I saw Melinda getting escorted out of the main building and climbed down.  I ran over.  "What the hell?"  I asked.

"Captain's orders."  Jack said.  "Four missing weapons and she's the one in charge.  You and Alex are supposed to find the weapons and who has them."

Melinda was taken into holding.

It was cold down here to say the least.  I was pacing back and forth.  I looked up hearing the door open and footsteps on the stairs.  It was Alex.  "Alex,"  I said sniffling.  "Please, tell me I can get out."  I said.

"I'm sorry, baby."  He said.  "We've checked all over and nothing."

"I didn't take them and I didn't let anyone in there."  I said with a sob.

"I know baby.  I know."  He said.

"Please, don't make me stay here by myself."  I said.  Jack appeared behind him.

"Liam's got the kids."  Alex said.  Jack unlocked the cell and let Alex in.  I hugged him pressing my face into his neck.  He lifted me off my feet and sat down on the bench with me in his lap.  My arms tight around his neck.  "It's going to be okay."  He whispered as I sobbed.  He made me look at him.  "I love you.  I promise, everything is going to be okay."  I nodded and he gave me a soft kiss.

Larissa and Cam were sitting outside when I walked over with the kids.  "Nothing?"  Cam asked.

"No."  I said.

"Where's Al?"  He asked.

"Staying with Mel."

"I'll help you keep looking.  Hon, can you...?"  Larissa nodded and took the kids inside.

"Ever do it in a jail cell?"  Alex asked trying to distract me.  I looked at him.

"This cot isn't exactly comfortable."  I said.

"Who said anything about using the cot?"  He said with a smile.

"I bet someone forgot a condom."  I said.

"Shit."  He said making me laugh.  I kissed his cheek.
