New Title Part Two

Alex has been gone most of the week and Liam was on the perimeter wall when I was rushed to the infirmary from by the park.

----Liam

I turned around hearing someone running.  "Liam!"  It was Nick's kid.

"What's wrong?"  I asked.

"It's Mel."  She said.  I climbed down and ran to the infirmary.  I ran inside and doc stopped me.

"Liam, wait.  I need space, just stay back a minute so I can work.  I don't have enough room."  The room was a small exam room.  "I'm going to do an ultrasound."

I stepped outside and paced as doc checked on Melinda and the baby.

I was gathering things the baby would need when he or she arrived.  Alex.  I heard over the walkie.  Alex, are you close?

"Liam, I'm at the town about 5 miles from the compound."

Mel is in the infirmary.  We have a shit ton of zombie fucks at the main gate.  There's a surgeon at the other base.  We need him here.

"I'll get him.  What's wrong with Mel?"

Her appendix burst.  We need the surgeon now before her and the babies die.

"Did he just say babies?"  Nick asked.  I looked at him.

"We need to get the surgeon."

Liam stayed with me the entire time I was unconscious.  I could feel cold rags being placed on my forehead and ice packs placed on me and around me trying to keep my temperature down.

----Alex

I walked into the infirmary with the surgeon around midnight.  Doc pulled him aside to address the situation.  Liam stood up when I passed the curtain.  Melinda was pale, but her face was red with fever.  "Doc just gave her something to help with her fever.  The babies are fine for now.  The surgeon needs to operate."  He said.

"Alex, Liam."  Doc said.  I turned to the doc keeping Melinda in my sight.  "We can operate now.  We need to get things set up.  We have everything we need, but it will clear most of our medical supplies."

The leader came in.  "Alex, I know you just got back, but there's a couple of clinics and a hospital a couple days on foot from here."

"I'll go."  Liam said.

"Liam."  I said.

"You just got back.  You have a way with her that I don't that keeps her calm.  I drive her nuts."  He said.  "Stay with her.  I'll be back as soon as I can."

"She's going to need antibiotics, bandages and so on."

"Got it doc.  I'll bring everything I can get my hands on."  Liam said.

Melinda opened her eyes and saw Liam.  "Liam."  She whispered.

"I'm here.  Alex came back early."  He said pointing at me.  She turned her head and saw me.  She smiled weakly.

"Hey babe.  If you wanted me back so badly all you had to do was say so."  I said.

"My plot worked anyway.  Both of my guys are here."  She coughed.  I helped her sit up to take a drink of water.

"Liam has to run after medical supplies.  He will be gone a day, two max."  I said.

"Alex will stay here.  Everything is going to be okay."  Liam said.  He kissed her forehead and she was out again.

Liam left within the next 20 minutes.  I was outside while they operated on Melinda.  Jack walked over and sat down beside me.  "She's going to be fine and so will the baby."  He said.

"Babies.  She's having twins."  I said.

"Congratulations."  He said.  "I talked to Liam already.  You and him can share second in command if you are interested.  You can go on runs when you want or stay here with your wife.  Meetings twice a week.  Daily status report.  All in all a better position here."

"Yeah and title of boss."  I said.

"Think about it."  He said.  I nodded.
