The Past pt 2

I finished taking a shower and I wrapped myself in my robe and unlocked the door.  Alex and Liam looked up when I came in, I held out the wrap and Alex took it.  Liam pulled me into his lap.  Alex wrapped my wrist just like Doc showed him.

"Before everything happened, before you two showed up, my parents took off when things got bad.  Everyone else in my life left.  I'm constantly worried about you guys leaving and never coming back."

"Mel, first of all, we don't have to worry about supplies and food for a while.  Second, we aren't going anywhere.  Someone has to be here to stop you from doing irresponsible things that could put you and that baby in trouble."  Alex said.

Liam tugged the tie to my robe, I ended up between them.

Morning came, I woke up, Liam was still asleep.  I kissed his cheek and got up.  I put on a pair of jeans and a long sleeve shirt.  I walked into the kitchen, putting my hair up in a ponytail.  Alex was making breakfast.

"Morning."  He said giving me a kiss.

"Morning."  I said taking a bite of a strawberry.  "We need a bigger bed."  I said making him smile.

"Mama!"  Riley said.

"Hey big guy."  I said kissing his cheek.  "I have to go to the community store today and document new items, plus it's Sunday."

"I'll take the kids to play with Evie.  I have to talk to the captain."  Alex said.

"I can drop them off on the way."  I said.

After breakfast, I wrote a note and set it on the table for Liam.

I was putting things on the shelf when I heard the door open and shut.  "Just a minute."  I said.  I turned and I felt the pain as the knife connected to my stomach.  It was Trevor.

"Shh..."  He said.  He eased me down to the floor.  "You have made a fool out of enough people."  He said.

I saw the note.  At the armory, kids playing with Evie while Alex talks to captain.

I went outside and I saw Carly running from the armory, she ran to the infirmary and doc followed her out. 

I walked over and I didn't see Melinda.  I went inside and I saw Melinda on the floor a puddle of blood under her as blood gushed from her stomach.  I got beside her head.  "Mels,"  I said.  "Who did this?"  I asked her.

"It hurts."  She said with a sob.

"I know baby.  I know."  I whispered.  She reached for my hand.  I took her blood covered hand in mine.  "Doc."  I said.

"I don't know."  He said.  "Hand me that sheet."  I gave it to him.  "Mel, this is going to her.  Look at Liam okay?"  I pressed her blood covered hands against my face.  Larissa helped get the sheet under her and Doc tied it around her torso and pulled tight.  She yelled out coughing.

"M-my baby."  She said.

"I don't know right now Mel.  Liam let's get her to the infirmary."

The captain and I were checking around the grounds when Carly ran over.  "Hey you."  The captain said.

"It's Mel."  She said out of breath.  "She's been stabbed.  Someone attacked her at the community store."  I ran ahead and to the infirmary.  Liam was sitting on the front step, his arms around his legs, his head on his knees.

"Liam."  I said thinking the worst.  He looked up at me.  He had blood on his face.

"Doc doesn't know if..."  He said.  I swallowed the lump in my throat.  "I should have been awake.  I should have went with her."  He said.  "I'm sorry man.  I'm sorry."

"It's not your fault."  I said.  "Do we know who did it?"  I asked.  He looked around me.

"One guess."  He said.  I turned and saw Trevor.  He had blood on his shirt and hands.  He was packing things into a car.  The captain ran over.

"Carly is freaking out.  How is she?"  He asked.

"Doc doesn't know."  Liam said.  He saw Trevor and pulled out his gun.  Trevor saw us and dropped everything before running.  We chased him down and I slammed into him.  He flipped over and tried to kick me, I slammed my fist into his face.

"I told you to stay away from my wife.  Now you have to put up with both of us."  I said.  I yanked him to his feet and drug him to the gate.  The captain opened the gate and I shoved Trevor right into a group of zombies before shutting the gate.

I walked over to Liam and the captain.  "Should have let me shoot him."  The captain said.

"That would sent the nearest herd this way.  Trust me I would have loved to kill him myself."  I said.
