CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
And without a word, Hyūga put his lips on top of mine.
He gripped my hand that he was holding as his other thumb caressed the side of my face and he deepened the kiss. I slightly parted my lips in answer to him and I felt him smirk against me.
As he slowly pulled away, I opened my eyes to look at him. I released a breath as the smirk I felt him made was still on his lips.
"I thought you said you were not planning on making out behind those trees," I joked as blood rushed to my head at the thought of what I just did.
Hyūga winked at me. "I never said I was not planning on it. I simply asked you to stop making dirty jokes,"
I scrunched my face up at him in answer. I, an Akatsuki, was getting the runaround from a kid. If Pein knew he'd make me run up and down the hill near our place for 100 times as punishment. An Akatsuki can never be weak.
A moment of weakness is all it will take.
And everything will come crumbling down.
I had no idea if it was the Hyūga's funny reactions to my teasing, or if it was his pitiful attempt at expressing himself--but for him, I was willing to risk everything.
"Let's go back," he started as he took my hand once more and started pulling me back towards where we came from. "They might be looking for--"
The Hyūga never finished what he was saying as I pulled him back towards me. He stumbled at the suddenness of my action and spun around to try not to fall flat on his back. As he did, I let go of his hand and wrapped my arms around his neck; pulling him back into another kiss.
His eyes widened in shock before his mind caught up to what I just did. In return, he raised a hand and held the back of my head as he pulled me closer to him than I thought was possible. I laughed at his sudden aggressiveness but had not pulled away. Instead, I closed my eyes once more.
But I felt a sudden rush of apprehension.
I pushed away from Hyūga and looked around. Him, as smart as he was, quickly realized what was wrong and he held onto my arm.
"What is it?" he asked under his breathe.
"I'm not sure," I answered, shaking my head--trying to see behind the thick trees that covered the meadow we were at. "But I'm sure it's not good,"
I took a deep breath and held it in as I squinted my eyes. My ears twitched at every little sound. But I never let anything distracted me from finding out the source of my sudden apprehension. I don't feel alarmed at nothing. My gut feeling had always been on point and it had never once failed me.
As sudden as the feeling that came over me, came the soft, low sound of a gun fired with a silencer. But my ears were trained to even hear the flapping of a butterfly's wings so I heard it loud and clear.
Quickly and without missing a beat, I pushed the Hyūga away from the trajectory of the bullet. He stumbled back. But as the perfect man that he was, he didn't even fell to the ground.
"Ssshit!" I exclaimed as I bolted to my feet, pulling Hyūga behind me to run away from our attacker that I still can't see. "I don't have anything on me to use against a gun. I was soooo definitely not expecting them to attack so straightforwardly!"
"What are we going to do?" Hyūga asked as he ran in pace with me.
I glanced around as I led him back towards the observation deck. "First of all, there's safety in numbers. We'll hide in the crowd. No one would be dumb enough to try and kill you with so many witnesses,"
"And if they are? Dumb enough, I mean?" he asked.
I turned to him over my shoulder. My lips in a straight line and my eyes burning with determination. "I will keep you safe,"
Apparently, our attacker was not on the dumb side but on the faster side. Before we could emerge out of the trees, a shadow flicked on my side and I was suddenly on the ground. I hissed as I pushed the figure off of me and jumped back on my feet. I crouched in a fighting position as I assessed my enemy.
He was a tall, bulky man. Quite contrary to his speedy toes. He was wearing a black ski mask that hid his face. Well, duh, of course he would be hiding his face.
Hyūga rushed towards my side and I slightly pushed him behind me, still crouched; my eyes focused on the unknown man in front of us. But my charge, just like his dad, was not one to listen. Instead of just hiding behind me, he stood beside me and made a karate form.
"Dammit, Hyūga, stay back," I growled.
He shook his head. "I might not be as good as the professional you but I'm still a captain of a martial arts club, you know,"
I let out a exasperated breath but let him be. He was right. I was just too prideful to admit that out loud. He was definitely not the type of person who would just stand back and let others do the work for him. Besides, I had no idea who the man was but I instantly knew, that if it came to power battle, there was no way I would win against someone as big as he was.
While we were running, I had taken my magic rod out of my bag. So, I raised my hand that was holding it and clicked the button. The rod expanded, earning a surprise look from the man standing beside me.
I spun the rod twice in my hand to get me used to holding it. The masked man laughed at it as he revealed two daggers from his sleeves. He gripped both of its hilt and rushed towards me. I parried his daggers with the steel rod I was holding.
We went back and forth, with him trying to slash me with his blades and me throwing him back with my weapon. He jumped down towards me and I gritted my teeth in full concentration as his height was forcing my knees to bend.
Hyūga was about to help me when I told him to stay still. His eyes told me he wanted to do anything than follow me but did as I told.
My willpower won and I pushed our attacker away once more. He flipped once in the air as he jumped back away, landing squarely on his feet. I pointed my rod against him once more, crouching once more into an attacking position.
"Who are you and what do you want?" I asked, trying to buy time. "To be attacking him like this in broad daylight, you clearly don't care even if his death won't seem like an accident,"
The man laugh. His voice was rugged, deep. It wasn't anyone familiar. "My client don't really care how as long as he's dead. Though, I can't believe he'd hire a kid like you,"
I gave him my smirk. My own version of the Uchiha smirk I've learned from Itachi. "Ohhhh~~," I hummed. "You seriously did not just underestimate me, right?"
And with that, I jumped up and raised the steel rod up above my head before bringing it down towards the man in front of me. We exchanged blows once more. The sounds of clanging metal echoed around us.
I spun the steel rod and one of the mystery man's dagger flew out of his hands. With a smirk, I rushed for another attack. But I had became to confident. From the hand that was not holding a dagger now had a gun.
Wide-eyed, I couldn't stop myself from the momentum I threw myself at him. I watched as he raised his hand and pointed his gun straight at me.
Shit!
If I die right now, Itachi will kill me.
