CHAPTER TEN
"Anyone can tell me what this is?" Anko-sensei asked and my eyes widened in sheer joy as I looked at it. Its sharp edge glinting off from the light and its natural beauty was enough to take anyone in.
The Hyūga besides me raised his hands before I could. "It's a throwing star or ninja star, more commonly known as shuriken—its Japanese name,"
Anko-sensei nodded. "Any idea about shurikens?"
"As the name implied, it is mostly used by ninjas but not exclusively as samurai warriors use them as well. It is a long-range weapon but not enough to kill with it alone,"
Anko-sensei stood up from her chair and walked in front of her table before she leaned in it. "That last one is a sort of common misconception,"
I stood up as well. I gave a confident smirk, ignoring the curious look I was getting from the guy standing beside me. "Contrary to popular belief, it is not primary intended as a killing weapon. Shuriken are introduced as a weapon for self-protection after all or used to distract opponents. But that does not discount the facts that a shuriken can pierce through opponents flesh or even knock them out. Shuriken usage is considered as a highly advance skill. And the art of wielding shuriken is called shuriken-jitsu,"
Anko-sensei looked pleased at the two of us as she signaled us to sit back down. She twirled the shuriken in her hand. Anko-sensei was a really good teacher. Her love for weapon almost compare to mine. Her class was called 'Weapon Knowledge and Uses'. It was an elective I couldn't really miss.
The only thing was—I hadn't expected Neji Hyūga to be taking it as well. We only had three classes together and this was one of them. But then, I guess, I shouldn't be shock. After all Hyūga clan is known for its martial art technique and style. Their family even has their own world-renowned dojo.
As the bell rung signaling the end of class, I stood up without even sparing a glance to my seatmate. As I walked passed Anko-sensei, she called me back. I spun around and saw the Hyūga standing beside her. With a frown, I walked back towards the teacher's table. While we waited for the rest of the class to leave, I finally decided to look at him.
He was already looking at me. His eyes still reflected annoyance but I don't see anger in them. But it still doesn't change the fact that the boy gets on my nerves most of the time, especially after last night's fiasco at our room. Due to work, I was trained to read people, know them by first meeting and such. The way I saw this Hyūga was different with the way he acts around me.
Usually, he looks down at everyone with his chin held high to show his swagger and his oh-so-greatness; he doesn't really hide the fact that he thinks he's above everyone else. He wasn't exactly the friendliest kid in the playground but he never spends his energy and attention to argue with anyone. The most words he'll speak were a sentence and that was the end of it.
But I swear this guy made it his life mission to irritate me. He always needed to have the last word against me.
"So, Tenten," Anko-sensei started once every student left the room but me and Hyūga. "I've noticed it since your first class. You're really knowledgeable about weapons, huh?"
I nodded, unsure where the topic was going to and why she needed Hyūga there as well. Anko-sensei sat down in her desk. "I've also heard from Gai how you blew away gym records. So, what do you say about joining the martial arts club? I'm pretty sure with these records you'll catch up in no time even if you don't have any knowledge about it," she finished, reading the paper on her clipboard.
I frowned. "And what does that have anything to do with Hyūga?" I asked, pointing at the boy beside me.
He crossed his arm, staring down at me and Anko-sensei let out a low laugh. "Well, Neji Hyūga is the captain. And I'm the club advisor,"
