CHAPTER FOURTEEN
"I thought you said you're not going to join? Isn't that the whole reason why you accepted the match?" Sakura asked as she jumped in her bed after we got back from dinner.
I spun around on my chair. "Well, I just thought it might be fun,"
"Tenten!!!!" Temari exclaimed as she kicked the door open and she entered the room with Ino.
She rushed towards me and took my hand in hers. While Ino kept patting me on my back as they both laugh. I frowned at them as Hinata calmed them down, saying they were too loud and we might get reported.
"I can't believe this. You actually defeated Neji in a match," Ino squealed. "Neji! Of all people!"
I rolled my eyes. This 'apparent milestone' won't be dying anytime soon. We spend the rest of the day just talking about minor things like how our score was for the quiz that day or what we thought about the new, cafeteria menu.
But for me, it was all new.
All I've known for late night talks were mission briefs, endless paper works, or just more training.
And. . .
Curiously. . .
I found myself quite enjoying it.
The next morning, I was walking with Hinata to go to our class together with Ino. The damn girl wouldn't shut up about her upcoming date with Sai. I tuned her out the moment she repeated everything she had already said but Hinata was being a good friend and continued to listen.
I looked out the hallway window and saw something glint over the trees. My eyes widened when I realized what it could be. I quickly pushed Hinata out of the window range and she stumbled towards Ino who managed to break their fall.
"Wha—? Tenten?" Hinata stuttered in shocked as the two of them stared at me.
I hastily leaned over the wall beside the window to stay out of sight. With a deep breathe, I carefully looked out. I squinted my eyes to try to see far enough. And another glint greeted me. This time, I could actually pinpoint where it had come from.
It was from the bushes directly in front of the window we were in. And it most definitely wasn't just a mirror.
"Tenten, what's wrong?" Ino asked as she stood beside me and tried to look out the window.
The glint move and wide eyed, my hands reacted faster than my mind. I pulled Ino away from the window even before I could think of it. Shocked, she stumbled back and fell to the floor. Hinata, the sweet girl she is, quickly helped her to her feet.
Fuming, Ino faced me with her hands on her waist. "What the hell, Tenten?"
"It's. . . I'm sorry but. . ." I looked around the hallway for a way out of this situation. And I saw a bulb lit up. "There was a cockroach,"
To say Ino screeched was an understatement. The whole hallway shook as Ino tried to shake off the imaginary cockroach. Hinata and I did our best to calm her down and assured her it wasn't there anymore. By the time she was calm, the glint from the window vanished. And we went to class.
I let out a sigh as I glanced towards Hinata who was sitting beside me, listening to the class. She felt my eyes on her and she turned to me before giving me a soft smile. I couldn't help but return it.
For someone as gentle and as sweet as Hinata, I just don't know why anyone would want to kill her. I mean—even if she was the heiress she really doesn't give the aura of someone who'd fight for the position. So why?
Suddenly, something hit the back of my head and I turned around to see a piece of paper fell. With a frown, I picked it up before I looked around the room. Naruto was hiding behind his book; which wouldn't have been too obvious if the book wasn't upside down.
I faced forward once more and discreetly opened the letter.
"Hey, Hinata! Do you maybe want to—"
I quickly folded the letter closed when I realized it wasn't for me. I looked over my shoulder to see a panicking Naruto and I rolled my eyes at him as I raised the letter and made a show of giving it to Hinata. He beamed at me as Kiba gave me two thumbs up.
"What's this, Tenten?" Hinata asked quietly.
"It's from lover boy over the back," I answered, pointing over my shoulder.
Hinata glanced and turned a funny shade of red as Naruto waved at her. Though, I laughed as a flying chalk hit him straight in the middle of his forehead. I watched from my peripheral vision as Hinata opened the letter.
The girl was seriously amusing. It was never tiring to watch her change colors with every passing second. Though, my eyes widened when Hinata turned purple. I jumped to my feet in time to catch her before she could fall to the floor. Everyone in the room stared at us even the teacher.
Kakashi-sensei lazily walked towards us and knelt down on our level. "What happened?"
"Uh...." I murmured. "She fainted?"
Kakashi-sensei didn't look amused. "I could see that, Tenten. I'm asking why,"
"How would I know?" I raised both my hands in surrender but panicked when Hinata started falling again. Thankfully, Kakashi-sensei caught her.
"Well, who can help Ms. Hyuga here to the clinic?"
"I can! I can!" Naruto childishly volunteer, raising his hand high up in the air. With a sigh, Kakashi-sensei agreed and I watched Naruto carry Hinata out of the room bridal style.
If the girl finds out Naruto actually touched her, she'll faint once more.
With a sigh, I returned my focus to Kakashi-sensei who looked like he wanted to be anywhere but there.
