𝘼𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙪𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 stayed clasped into her lap, her gaze relaxed on the colorful sites outside the tinted window. Her heart was pattering with nervousness, the weight of being so close to James was nauseating for some reason.
Every time the car would go over a speed bump, or he would turn down another street, or even lull the car to a different lane, a small moment would pass- just a split second- where their elbows would touch.
It made her anxious, so she decided to clasp her hands into her lap where they wouldn't move anywhere.
The day hadn't been particularly kind to her, she felt awful- her head was pounding and her chest felt like it was going to explode.
She planned on going to see one of her friends at the law firm, because when James told her about his law degree, it reminded her of him.
But the subway ride was loud, which felt like a sledgehammer to her head. And her walk to the firm weakened her greatly, straining every one of her muscles.
She was sore beyond comparison, so much so that she wasn't sure she would be able to rightfully exit the car she was in without making herself look completely idiotic and clumsy.
And, unknowingly to her, James had noticed everything. Every quiet intake of breath when their arms came in contact, every inaudible wince when the car jumped from any external forces.
And now, as Alouette looked outside the window and tried her absolute hardest to keep back a single tear prodding her vision- product of her bludgeoning headache- her knee tapped furiously against the carpet of his floor.
She really liked James, she knew she did, and the mortification of him seeing her cry would scare her into confinement for the rest of her miserable life.
James looks to the floor of the passenger seat, where he sees her little feet perched. He notices she even had on a pair of red and white shoes that matched her shirt.
Gently, he reaches his hand over, keeping one on the wheel, and places it on her knee, stopping it from shaking in an effort to calm her.
Her leg stops, and she looks to him. His gaze is focused outside the windshield, but she's still grateful, if a little embarrassed. "Sorry," she mutters.
"No need to apologize." He turns the car down Main Street, the one which connects Rosebury and Dewsbury.
"It's just not the best day." She felt the need to explain to him. "I-"
