Something You Must Cut

the boy stood in the woods.

-3rd Person POV-
Later on, Tanjiro started to cut some trees down. He got a couple of logs and picked up the basket. While picking it up he said, "There. Nezuko, let's go." He took a couple of steps and realized he was talking to no one. He asked himself, "What did I just say?"

Tanjiro made it home and announced, "I'm back!" His mother greeted, "Welcome home, Tanjiro." Tanjiro put down the bask and said, "Yeah, I'm home!" He entered the other room and Takeo greets him, "Welcome home, Nii-chan!" The other two greeted him as well. Tanjiro looks around and asks, "Huh? Where's Nezuko?" Takeo answered, "Nee-chan went up the mountain to pick vegetables." Tanjiro gasped and asked, "In broad daylight?" The kids got confused and Hanako asked, "She's not supposed to?" Tanjiro said, "Well... Um..." Kie came from behind and said, "Tanjiro... Could you get the bath ready? I'm going to be busy with this for a while."

Tanjiro took to pails and walked to the nearest river. While walking, he thought to himself, "I keep saying all these strange things." "Am I tired maybe?" He asked himself. Nezuko's box from the real world made a brief appearance as Tanjiro looked toward it. He swore that he saw an object sitting right there. He said, "Huh? It's gone."
He made it to the river and asked himself, "I wonder what that was for just a split second. A toolbox perhaps? I guess my eyes were playing tricks on me." He grabbed the pail and before he could put it in the water, he heard himself yell, "Wake up! Wake up!" He saw himself inside the Demon Slayer uniform and was dragged inside the river. He... or his reflection said, "Wake up! You're under attack! It's a dream! This is a dream! Wake up now!" The original Tanjiro thought, "I see... That's right, I'm... onboard the train!" His reflection screams, "Wake up and fight! Fight! Fight!"
Tanjiro then found himself eating with his sibling. Takeo said, "Nii-chan, give me your pickled radishes!" Hanako says, "No, you don't! You stop it right now! Why are you always taking food from Nii-chan?" Takeo asks, "What's your problem?" Hanako says, "You just had seconds!" They both stand up and Hanako looks at him in anger while Takeo stares at her, as if he was ready to tease her. Tanjiro thought, "No good! I'm not awake yet! I'm still inside this dream! How can I get out of it? Now that I realized that it's a dream... What am I supposed to do?"

-Real World-
Nezuko opened her box and falls out with a small thud. She looked down the aisle and saw Kyojuro holding the girl's neck. She looked at Zenitsu and Tanjiro. Tanjiro lays there panting while telling himself, "I have to wake up..." Nezuko nudged him but he didn't wake up. She grabs his arm and puts it to her head expecting him to rub her head. His hand dropped and she started to get frustrated. She headbutts him to wake him up. But instead, she earned herself a bloody head as blood dripped down her forehead. She tears up, screams and headbutts Tanjiro's head while pink flames engulf them.

-Inside Tanjiro's Dream-
Tanjiro sat still in his seize position in frustration as his wrist began to form a pink flame. It soon spread toward his whole body as Hanako screamed, "Onii-chan! What should we do? The fire is-" Takeo interrupts, "Nii-chan!" That flames stopped as Tanjiro thought, "That's Nezuko's scent! It's Nezuko's blood! Nezuko... Nezuko!" Tanjiro stood up and the flames reappear and transformed him into his Demon Slayer uniform. He looked at himself and thought, "My uniform... My Nichirin Sword... I'm waking up! Little by little. Little by little!" Takeo and Hanako ask, "Nii-chan?" "Nii-chan, are you all right?" Tanjiro looked down in guilt and said, "Sorry. I have to go." He walked toward the door and apologized, "I'm sorry." He opened the door and dashed outside as they all screamed, "Nii-chan!"
Tanjiro ran down the path as he thought to himself, "If the demon who's showing me this dream is nearby... I have to find him and slash him right away! Where is he? I have to..." After a few minutes of running, Nezuko asked, "Where are you going, Onii-chan?" Tanjiro halts as Nezuko said, "I picked lots of vegetables today!" Tears formed in Tanjiro's eyes as the rest of the family showed up. Shigeru said, "Kaa-chan! This way!" Hanako explained, "Onii-chan was on fire all of a sudden!" Kie asks, "Tanjiro, are you all right?" Takeo let Rokuta down as Kie asked, "What's the matter, Tanjiro? Why are you dressed like that?" Tanjiro, who was full of guilt and sadness said, "I wish I could stay here... forever." He mentally added, "I wish I could turn around and go back. If none of this happened... they'd all have been alive and well now. And Nezuko would've lived in the sunlight, under the blue sky. If none of this had happened... I should be here making charcoal every day. I never would've laid a hand on a sword! If none of this had happened... If none of this had happened..." Rokuta took a few steps before Tanjiro slowly started to walk away. While walking, he thought, "But I've lost them now. I can never go back!" He started to run as Rokuta tried to chase him while yelling, "Onii-chan! Don't leave us behind!" He tripped as Tanjiro's years began to fall. He mentally apologizes, "Sorry! I'm sorry, Rokuta! We can't be together anymore. But I'll always be thinking of you, okay? I'll be thinking of you all! There are lots of things to thank you for. Lots of things to say sorry for! But I will never forget you! No matter what, my heart will always be with you! So, please... forgive me!"
From the sideline, the sick boy said to himself, "I have to destroy his spiritual core right away."
He stabs an invisible wall and rips it open. It reveals an empty area of clouds and water. The boy walked in and was shocked to see such a sight. He thought, "So, this is inside of his heart? How can it be so beautiful? It's so endlessly vast... and... also warm."

-Real World-
Emmy said, "They're having trouble, aren't they? I wonder why? They haven't destroyed any of the spiritual cores yet. Oh well... I guess it doesn't matter since they're buying me some time.

-Tanjiro's Dream-
Tanjiro came to a stop as he thought, "Not here. But I can smell a demon, faintly. What's this, though? It's like there's a film over everything! There's a faint demon scent everywhere! I can't tell the exact location!" He told himself, "I have to hurry! Nezuko's bleeding! If everyone else is asleep, we're in big trouble!" He thought to himself, "What should I do? Am I unable to use Total Concentration Breathing right now? Am I just ca sleep right now?" Tanjiro heard a voice call out, "Kakarot..." A gust of wind blew toward him, causing him to cover his face.  A man appeared behind him who looked exactly like Tanjiro (Kakarot). The man finished, "Take up your sword. There's something you must cut." The man disappears as the gust of wind stops. Tanjiro was confused by what it meant and who that voice was. The voice sounded familiar but was getting sidetracked. He mentally repeats, "There's something... I must cut. There's something I must cut... in order to wake up." He pulled out his sword and gulped. He adds, "I think I know what it is. But what if I'm wrong? If what happens in this dream affects reality, too... there'll be no going back. Don't hesitate! Do it! You have to do it!" He placed his sword onto his neck and thought, "My death in this dream will lead me to reality! In other words... what I have to cut is... my own neck!" He kneels and has his hand ready to push his sword into his neck. He screams as loud as he could and pushed his sword into his neck, slitting it in the process. His blood dropped to the ground.

-A Small Secret-
Tanjiro's younger brother (who is older than Nezuko by a year. *He was originally supposed to be Tanjiro*) was named Haruka*. He always wanted to chop wood with Tanjiro whenever Tanjiro would go. Haruka always admired Tanjiro's strength when he would chop it in one swing.

Haruka '陽火' (Kanji meanings: 陽- means "sun." | 火: means "fire.") If you couldn't tell, I made the boy's name that resembled 'Fire' and 'Sun'.
