~~Day 24 in Nepal~~

Normal POV

4 days.

4 days since the Earthquake hit. We still haven't left the Medical Centre to go back up to the Base. My back is killing from the Office floor we have been sleeping on but it's all we can do until the transport arrives for everyone waiting to be moved to the hospitals. The rest of 7 Section have been working long hours clearing the roads and trying to help in fixing phone lines to try and get some communications back up and running but we still haven't had any word on it being back yet. We've had some new arrivals over the past couple of days who had been trapped in buildings but we managed to get them stable and into a bed to wait with the other for transport. Our main problem today is the lack of medicine. It's running dangerously low and we don't know how long we can go without it. And with no way of communicating with Charlie, we can't get anything from the Base either so we are stuck. I can tell it's all starting to chip away at Natalia so I've been getting her to sleep and rest up as much as I can, hoping to keep her level headed. As much as she tells me she is okay, I can see her small moments she has to herself as she tries to not let her emotions bubble up to the surface. I've grown even closer with Dr Karr since we are managing to just work through as much as we can, expecting the transport to arrive any minute so we are trying to keep on top of everything so when they do arrive, there is no hold up and they can move everyone as quickly as possible. I was surprised to learn he has two kids of his own who live in Kabul. He showed me some pictures and they are just mini versions of him. He then showed me some family pictures with his Wife, who sadly passed away two years ago. I didn't pry and ask what happened, by his demenour is seemed to be something sudden. I showed him some family pictures from my phone which he loved to see and ask me about. It was nice talking about them all with someone who I have been working closely with like this.

As I am busy doing some routine checks, I can't help notice Natalia sitting staring at the food in her hand sitting on the front steps of the building. She's deffiently starting to feel the strain of all of this. It happens to everyone at first, and I know she will grow stronger from it eventually, but right now I'm worried about her. I look over and see Dr Karr with the same worry as he catches onto what I am staring at. I wash up and go over to him, letting him know I am going to check on her. He agrees instantly, urging me to do so. I grab a bottle of water and some sterile wipes to take out with me before heading out to join her. I carefully sit beside her and open my water, letting her come out of her daze in her own time. She seems to finally snap herself from it making me smile as she looks over to me with a small, tired smile. "Hey." I whisper making her laugh lightly. "Hi Cap." She jokes making me chuckle. "How you feeling?" I ask and she lets out a small sigh as she plays with the food in her hand. "It's all kinda catching up on me you know.. It's tiring." I nod my head softly in agreement, knowing exactly how she feels. "It is. It's exhausting. Which is why you need to eat to keep your energy up." I nudge her food bag and she quickly catches on to what I am hinting at and carries on eating her food. We sit in a small comfortable silence as she finishes her food. Already seeming a little better as she turns to look at the wipes I have in my hand. "What's the wipes for Lane?" She questions and I turn to face her on the steps as I hand them over to her. "I think I got some dirt in the cut on my cheek so I wanted you to take a look for me." I offer and she smiles and nods her head as she takes the wipes and pulls out a pair of clean gloves from her pocket. "Sure thing Harley."

"It's healing well. Don't think it's going to scar." Natalia comments as she finishes wiping the cut on my cheek. "Good to hear." I smile as she finishes up and grabs the dirty wipes. "Cover it when your sleeping on that office floor, stop any dust or dirt getting in it." I nod and smile at her advice, thankful she is still able to work without any question, even with the tiredness creeping in on her. "Thanks Jones. Will do." She smiles as we both stand up and head back inside. She goes to wash up as I walk past Dr Karr and pat his shoulder, letting him know Natalia is okay before I get back into my routine of things. A couple of hours pass and the room is quiet again. I notice Dr Karr washing up so I walk over to tell him to go and take a break but before I reach him, the loud noises of trucks start to rumble outside. As soon as I notice it is not our truck, I can't contain the smile as Dr Karr quickly realises too. I snap over to look at Natalia, who has the biggest smile on her face. I make my way to the doors behind Dr Karr and we are instantly met with ambulances and transport trucks to get these people to the hospitals. "I've never been so relieved to see an ambulance sat infront of me." Dr Karr comments making me smile. "I can't agree more." I say before walking down to greet the paramedics. "Sorry for the wait Captain. We got here as quickly as we could." I wave off his formalities as I shake his hand instead. "We are just thankful you are here now." He smiles and nods before taking me to the truck where the medicine is so I can begin to carry it inside. Natalia quickly joins me and we make quick work of the boxes before we head inside to help Dr Karr to move the rest of the patients. As soon as everyone is on board, we thank the paramedics and wave them off, all of us taking the time to be able to breathe again.

We eventually head back inside, knowing there a few people still here who didn't need to be moved to a hospital and will be able to go home or to the refuge centres in the next day or two. It's strange seeing the room so empty again but it's a huge relief. I tell Dr Karr to go take a break as I leave Natalia taking care of the few patients to sort through the medicine that arrived. I take my time, feeling my eyes starting to sting again with the lack of sleep so I make sure to triple check everything as I check off and record what we have and what we still need. As I am busy checking off my paperwork, I suddenly hear a familiar voice in the other room. I shrug it off at first, thinking it is just my head playing tricks on me but the voice calls out faintly again so I drop my clipboard and head out to investigate. As soon as I walk out the storage room, the voice is coming from the office. I walk inside and instantly my eyes widen as I hear that voice again. "Lane? Come in, Lane come in!" It's Charlie on my radio. I jump forward and grab it from on top of my bag and call out a hopeful reply. "Charlie? I'm here can you hear me?" I call out and wait for a reply. And to my surprise, I get one straight away. "It's so good to hear your voice through my radio Lane. We have managed to establish some communications so we are hoping we have everything up and running in a few hours." I can't contain my excitement as I rush out the office and look around to find Natalia as I call in a reply. "That's the second best news I have received today Sir. Over." I say loud enough to catch Natalia's attention across the room. I chuckle at her confused expression suddenly on her face as she watches me talk into the radio in my hand. But it quickly shifts to a smile as she hears Charlie's voice. "Second best? What's that supposed to mean Lane?" I can't help but laugh at both Charlie's surprised tone and Natalia's smile before I reply updating him on the transport arriving earlier.

"That's amazing news Lane. I will be sending Kai and Tyler to pick you both up and you can spend the night here for some proper rest." Charlie offers and as much as I feel bad for Dr Karr being here, I know we both need this. "Roger that Captain." I hook my radio over my chest and smile at Natalia as she finishes whatever she was in the middle of doing when I interupted. "Does that mean we can call home?" Natalia asks and I smile softly. "Hopefully when we get back we should be able too." I've never seen her smile so much at the news but she deserves it. "I'll let Dr Karr sleep a little longer so he is well rested for when we head back to Base later." Natalia nods as she moves to start her next task and I head back to finish the paperwork in the storage room. A new found source of energy running through me as I cling onto the small bit of hope that we can contact home later today. I can't wait to hear their voices and be able to tell them I am safe and well. As soon as I am done sorting through the medicine boxes and happy that there is more than enough supplies here to work with I head back to see Natalia finished checking on the few people left here to watch over. I check my watch and see it's not too long until Tyler and Kai will be here so I go to wake Dr Karr with some food and water so I can explain everything to him once he is awake. Thankfully, he is more than happy for us to head up to Base tonight and he has assured me he will get in touch if he needs any assistance through the night. We all make sure everything is done and up to date before I hear that familiar truck horn outside letting me know it's finally time for a shower, food and a good nights sleep on an actual bed tonight. And maybe if I am lucky, a phone call home..
