Most of the drive was silent except for the soft music playing. That was until a particular voice rang out through the music system: "Remember the night I held you when the full moon shone on our bond..."
Kayleb's eyes had widened, and his body tensed up. He could barely hold it together.
Seeing this, his little brother immediately turned off the radio. He didn't know why that voice brought Kayleb to the edge, but it wasn't the first time.
It had taken a few moments for Kayleb to catch his breath, but when he was able, he gave his brother a small grateful smile, eyes filled with tears.
Neither of them made a single sound for the rest of the ride.
As they pulled into the parking lot in front of the school, Kayleb could already feel the intense gazes of the surrounding people. He thought he was the only one feeling those gazes because his little brother didn't usually care about other people. But when he looked at him, he was shocked to see the concern on his brother's face.
The looks only intensified when the brothers got out of their car. The older of the two could hear whispers everywhere. Immediately, he felt various emotions coursing through his body and going straight into his broken spirit.
As if sensing the tremendous panic rising inside him, his little brother suddenly whistled at him. Only one of his two brothers could whistle that way. Maxie was too incompetent, but once they found out their little one could do it, they trained him for occasions like this or when his older brothers were stupid again. And ever since, he's done it every time they got carried away trying to get his two older brothers back on the ground and in line.
Knowing that some things don't change, get worse, or go away was a great relief to Kayleb.
Just a second after Ian brought him back from his dark, lonely world, he got his shit back together, at least for now.
Even a little grin spread across his lips as he straightened his body out again. The whispers stopped, and the looks people gave him changed a hundred and eighty degrees from that moment - it was amusing to him.
But the person most amazed by this sudden change was Ian himself. He knew better than anyone that his older brother didn't take things like that lightly, especially considering how heavily his twin's accident still weighs on his shoulders. This is why this turnaround was so surprising, but he knew it wouldn't last forever. But Ian was sure that as long as Kayleb wouldn't think about Maxie, everything should be fine: at least, that's what he is telling himself.
Ian struggled to keep pace with his older brother for the entire way from the car to the school door. Unfortunately, his legs were too short for his own good. To his amazement, however, his older brother opened the door and held it open until they both walked through.
For Kayleb, it was a little gratitude for Ian's helping hand he'd reached out to him. But it was also a silent promise that he, from now on, would try to be better: above all, to be a better brother.
On the other hand, his little brother looked him up and down suspiciously with his ocean-blue eyes, which seemed almost as endless as Maxie's. He couldn't even blame him for that. Just two hours ago, he ignored his existence, and now he was the "good" brother again? Something just had to be wrong.
Still, Ian had seen how bad things were for his older brother. Even a new school couldn't take away all his memories. He and Maxie were on top of the world at their old school. Maxie, the football star, and Kayleb, the school president and captain of the national swimming team. They ruled, sometimes pleasantly, and sometimes they were the biggest bullies because they could get away with it.
