Kayleb arrived a little late for his first class and sighed deeply. His history teacher, an older man, gave him a disapproving look. However, he became quite friendly after he showed him the nurse's papers. He even apologized. Kayleb was surprised, even stunned, because the man didn't seem like someone who would admit when he made a mistake.
Before he even had a chance to ask his teacher where to sit, the man asked him to tell the class a little about himself, something Kayleb hated more than anything. But to keep the promise he made to himself of being someone better, he did what he was asked to do.
"Kayleb, seventeen, my family and I have been living here in Caldor for about two weeks." He looked over at his teacher helplessly, hoping that he would save him from the moment. But instead, he asked the class if they had any more questions. He didn't know why, but at that moment, he had a sinking feeling that this man didn't particularly like him.
Not a second later, half the class had their hands up. Kayleb immediately groaned internally but said nothing. Instead, he pointed out various people who asked him their burning questions.
The first was a tall, buff guy with dirty blond hair and gleaming murky blue-green eyes - reminding Kayleb of a swamp - definitely his type. But to his dismay and judging by the jacket around his shoulders, was he one of the football jocks.
"Do you play sports, dude? You seem to do so, bro."
Kayleb's eyes glimmered with surprise that he seemed right in his earlier assumption. Inwardly, he even chuckled but didn't want to hurt the guy's feelings. Besides him, most of the other students rolled their eyes as well.
"Yes, I swim, play tennis, and exercise with my brothers."
Right after that, a girl's tiny hand came down. The guy nodded but didn't seem happy with the answer he got, maybe because it wasn't his favorite sport or because Kayleb didn't call him "bro," which wasn't the first time an athlete looked at him disapprovingly.
After the athlete, Kayleb chose a girl with long brown hair, hoping that maybe she had a question that wasn't as silly as the previous one.
"Where do you come from?"
Not stupid, but a question the boy didn't want to answer. Because they might get information about him that he doesn't want them to know.
"I'm from the other side of the country," was his brief reply, right before he quickly selected another girl.
Her question was so ridiculous that he couldn't help but laugh. She asked if he had a girlfriend. After a minute of uneasy laughter, Kayleb suddenly became cold. Bringing a shiver down everyone's back. He looked dead in her eyes. Nothing was left of the happy attitude he had a second before.
"No, I will never have a girlfriend because I swing for the other team." He emphasized it by winking at the athlete who asked his stupid sports question.
The guy and the girl both blushed in crimson red. The entire class wasn't sure whether to laugh or be silent. In the end, both happened. Pleased with himself, Kayleb assumed his proud state and sat by the window in front of the jock from earlier.
Even his teacher, whom he marked as his enemy in his mind, chuckled at how Kayleb treated the last girl. The class went well after his disastrous introduction, which made him highly uncomfortable. No one made stupid, derogatory comments about Kayleb's sexuality or rude behavior.
Every lesson started like this until noon. He wanted to murder everyone in this school when he left the fourth lesson of the day. The teachers and half the students didn't know him, so they asked more or less the same questions each time.
