Just half an hour after their most embarrassing car ride, Kayleb was standing in the kitchen cooking for them when he heard the doorbell. His eyes widened as he couldn't leave the stove without ruining everything.
"Ian, will you answer the door?" he called across the house.
A moment later, an equally confused Ian passed Kayleb. The brothers don't know anyone in town yet, so they worry about who might ring their doorbell.
Kayleb could hear the door opening but not what was said. Light music played in the kitchen while he cooked an old family recipe. The best recipe from the old cookbook that their grandmother gave to his mother when they were kids. This one was their absolute favorite, though.
He did it whenever he felt like it, if only to have peace with his brothers for a while. Although his family was great, they had a few bad days too. Like any other family, they had a few minor problems. Their parents weren't home often, which was better for everyone involved. So, it was up to Kayleb to take care of Ian and Maxie most of the time.
While he was cooking, a big smile was present on his face. For an odd reason, he felt like Maxie was standing right at his side while he did the one thing that gave peace to all three of them. His inner peace broke as a terrible smell hit his nostrils, and his eyes immediately changed into a deep red: a deep crimson even for him. A fearsome growl escaped his throat.
Long, hard steps brought him into the foyer. What he saw finished him off.
"Get out!" he yelled at the intruders. Most took a step back, but not their leader. His emotionless face studied him intensely. That was the moment Kayleb lost every ounce of control he had left.
He heard his feet rip his socks, his buttoned shirt stretched over his arms like a second skin, and he felt his skull and hands expand. Before he could think, he faced this group of noisy people who invaded his privacy after not getting their answers at school.
At this point, his pants and shirt are not far from tearing apart.
"Out!" he growled a second time. This time, most of them seemed to get the warning. Considering they immediately fled the house. Just not James, who was still standing in the room, more fascinated than ever. He couldn't take his eyes off Kayleb's body, which startled him but, at the same time, made him proud to have gotten such a strong reaction from him.
Kayleb needed him to get out of his territory before he would tear him apart, for real this time, just like his clothing were close to.
So he grabbed James by the neck, and to Kayleb's surprise, he didn't try to fight it. Luckily, before James could regain his senses, he threw him out the door into his friends' arms. As if they were one person, the brothers went to where the others had been standing, rubbing their bodies on the floor and walls.
Once the group's scent left their territory, the brothers had transformed back to their erelion form again. Only Ian's blue eyes and Kayleb's red eyes were the final evidence of what had occurred.
And even without his natural instincts, Kayleb realized quickly that this group of idiots must have followed them home. Even angrier than before, he grabbed his jacket from the rack, slipped his shoes over his tattered socks, and followed the group out of the house.
They were in a heap on the ground in front of his house, pushed there by James, whom Kayleb had thrown into their arms.
"How about you get up and follow me?" In his voice, they could clearly hear how upset he was at everything happening.
Without asking a single question, they did what he asked of them. Even James, who usually seemed less concerned with these things, was up in a second and following the stronger boy.
